Southern Sensibility ?

Here’s another thread that thankfully died two years ago… and now suddenly resurrected. It’s probaly safe to assume Artschoolmom and her son made their choice a long time ago.

Maybe you should read the whole post Columbia1985. They were talking about the confederate flag representing hate and slavery. THAT was what I was refering to. I know they talked about other stuff but they also talked about the confederate flag. “You clearly know very little about history” You cannot judge that fact by one thing I said. You are idiotic if you think you can judge my knowledge about history with one post. And I am accurate about the slavery issue. I mean if you didnt know that you must have the problem with not knowing history. “less about what makes W&L a special place.” are you kidding? I didnt even talk about W&L in my post. I was addressing another issue. Well, I will agree with you that I havent gone there to school so I cant know from a students perspective about what makes it a special place. But i have done my fair amount of research and visited the school so I know from a prospective student’s viewpoint of what makes it special.

MKO,

To many, whether you believe it or not, the Confederate flag does in fact represent hate and slavery. You are correct in stating that I cannot judge your knowledge of history from one post and for that I apologize, but your assertions “but listen to the historians most of them agree that slavery was a small disagreement compared to other things” and that you are accurate about the slavery issue are questionable, because most historians do not believe that it was a “small disagreement” even compared to other things. I am glad that you have a prospective student’s viewpoint of what makes W&L special, though I do wish that you had not posted on this board and topic, and I agree with FLVADAD that this thread thankfully died a couple of years ago and should not have been resurrected.
Also, I would caution you to be careful in your postings as admissions officers occasionally visit College Confidential.

I agree with you on your points…I am aware that it does represent hate and slavery to some but I think people need to realize its out history…and why cant we fly a flag that represents our history or dress up like confederates? I know no matter what a person does some people will be offended. I’m sorry to have resurrected this subject but I didnt really like some of the posts on here and was too hot headed at the time to not post something.

“Why’s it that people tend to equate conservative with racist?” -WL2011
“my politics teacher taught my class that the majority of those on welfare are white” -WL2011

People tend to equate conservative with racist because people who ARE racists tend to vote for conservative political candidates, mostly Republicans. That’s not saying most conservatives are racists; it is saying most racists are conservative in their political leanings. They damn sure don’t vote for liberals. So, it is easy to make the link.

On the “wefare” question, the teacher was correct. The majority of people on welfare in the USA are white, because the majority of people in the USA are white. What the teacher did not say is that a higher PROPORTION of minorities than whites are on welfare. But if you’re just counting heads, it’s true that the majority of Americans on welfare are white.

As a UGA grad, native southerner, and representative of the south, Please let me reassure you all here that that kind of thinking is NOT representative of the vast majority of southerrners. They are there, but very much on the fringe of normalcy. I am not sure of the validity of the story about UGA and the cotton story. But Georgia is a very progressive, very difficult school with some very bright minds and mostly liberal thinkers. Please do not judge the south by a very small minority.

Please don’t post to old threads.
