How difficult is it to get a spot in SPACE (Engineering Living Learning Community)? My daughter has been accepted into Pitt, but is not ready to pay the enrollment/housing fee until she hears back from a couple of other colleges. Are the rooms in the Engineering Community in the Towers at a premium? Do kids who want to live there need to send in their deposits early in order to get a good spot in the housing assignment process or is there room for any engineering student who wants to live there? Thanks for any information that you might be able to share!

The only thing you need to do in order to live on SPACE is fill out the application online. Other than that, you would apply for housing as usual. It is not necessary to send in your deposit early, but it certainly does not hurt. Most people who want to live on SPACE do end up there; I have heard of some people not getting a spot on the floors, but they did get placed in Tower A nonetheless. All they would have to do is come on up to the SPACE floors if they wanted to visit.

Since SPACE is in Tower A, when your daughter receives the housing info, make sure she places Tower A as her first choice (and it also doesn’t hurt to specify that you want to live on floor 11, which is where the SPACE girls floor is located). And no, living on SPACE is no more expensive. You pay the same amount of housing as everyone else in Tower A. Our floors are exactly like everyone else’s in Tower A’s; the only difference is that we are all engineering students.

Hope this helps!

BTW, here is the site saying a little more about SPACE:

When the 2010 - 2011 application becomes available, it should be posted there.

Emi2008: Thanks for the link and for the good information!
