do you guys usually write your essays in college using double spacing or just single spacing?

do you put two spaces after the period, or just one?

I think you're supposed to put two spaces after a period. That's what I was told when we did typing in elementary school.

I never learned two spaces after a period, I've never done that throughout middle/high school. I'd say go for the double spacing, it's easier to read.

Generally it's double-spaced. If a professor wants it a special way, he or she will tell you the desired format.

i never knew the double spacing thing until highschool so i'm used to it now. i thikn it's easier to read that way

the professor will tell you how to format your paper.

I've haven't turned in a single spaced paper in... I have no idea how many years.

The double space after a period thing goes back to typewriters, and the difference with monospaced and proportionally spaced fonts. I started doing 2 spaces because it increases your gross words a minute for typing class (# of characters / 5), so now I just always do it. It probably wouldn't be that big a deal to change the habit, but I don't really see a need to. Basically, it's unnecessary on a computer.

2 spaces after period.

depends on professor.

at least for mla format, it is definately double space. I think technically its double space after period, but i have always single spaced after the period.

hm...double spaced...please don't start a thread about how many spaces after a period

soccerguy315 is right about why some people tell you to do two spaces after a period. Since nobody uses a typewriter anymore, one space is the correct number after a period; one space has always been the number used by publishers. Obviously, though, no professor will care, unless he happens to be a sadist....

My typing teacher insisted we used two spaces after a period. You can bearely distinguish the difference and I don't think there's a guideline in most style guides so you should be OK either way.

Technically supposed to be 2 spaces; 1 space is used by journalists though.

I personally like the look of 1.5space, but I've always been told to double space so I'm used to it.

um...i meant how many spaces are there between lines?

double spacing

is like

this.

single spacing
is like
this lol.

We were talking about aero's question.

It depends on what your prof wants, but typically double-spaced. That's what I was talking about...I don't see how you can put 1.5 spaces between words...

1.5 spacing lines, not words.

I know lol
I was being sarcastic, because huhcollegehaha is all like, you didn't answer my question, when I obviously did.

I use two spaces after period out of habit. I don't remember someone telling me to do that, but I must have heard it somewhere. It isn't something you just randomly start doing...

That's technically the correct way, but it's not enforced. One computer I used at work had Microsoft Word that would correct me if I only put one space...

Well you can always change the spell check preferences to one space or two depending on what you want.

Do you write essays with a

space

in between paragraphs,

or do you
{tab space} indent the new paragraph?
