Physics or Spanish?

I am now debating between taking Honors Physics and Spanish. I applied for AP Spanish IV, don't know if I'll get it but if not it defaults to Honor Spanish IV. My counselor said she'd like to see me take Physics but I want to take Spanish because I have some interest in getting a Minor in it in college.

If you want to minor in it, then missing a year would make it harder for you to do your college placement tests. They're definitely a lot harder if you've had a year to forget things, so you might get stuck in a lower level college class than you should be.

Do colleges want the year of physics or would it not matter because I am pursuing higher level language? How would that be interpreted from an admission perspective?

They told us at our school that some colleges require Physics... If you know some colleges that you'd be interested in, you can check their websites for course requirements.

I'm not sure how it would look to an admissions point of view. You could explain the circumstances on the application.

Mentor- Physics is definitely more difficult, but because (he's?) thinking about language, the courses should be geared somewhat to that.

Do you have any clue what kind of college you want to go to? If I knew, I'd probably be able to give a better answer.

If Spanish is your interest take it. Also, if you're not taking the class, you might lose your ability to speak it (like I have). You can take Physics in college but you should definitely gear your classes towards YOUR interests--not your guidance counselor's.

A very tentative list includes St. Olaf, University of Denver, University of the Pacific, Air Force Academy, and University of Arizona Honors College. I am definitely not a math and science type so I don't want to take it.

michaelm, I was in a similar situation to you except it was between spanish and my favorite subject. I chose my favorite instead of science/spanish. I really think that avoiding subjects you're not interested in makes your transcript much more interesting to look at from an admissions standpoint. Yes, it makes it a bit more lop-sided. But, taking a class you don't like over a class you like...may not help you if you decide to apply as a Spanish major.

It's been over two years since my last science class! I'm glad.

^no way! i've been taking 2 science classes since freshman year (currently jr). don't have any more to take next year besides chem =P Haha I like math so much better but i've never been good at math. i'm okay at science tho :D

My state has a requirement of three state tests/year long classes. I started in 8th grade. So by 10th, I was done (with chemistry). In 11th, I said hell no to physics. And...I was very happy.

I would take physics because I've heard that some colleges require it. But if you want to minor in spanish take spanish, unless there's room in your scheduale to take both.

Is your school's Spanish IV the language or literature class
lang. = pretty easy
lit. = pretty impossible
lit. is pretty much an english class in Spanish (analyzing poetry and literature instead of just learning the language)
