Specific Tips on Raising PSAT scores

Hey guys, I'm a sophmore and I just took a practice PSAT and got only 163. I am planning to take a prep class over the summer before junior year because it helped my friends' scores raise by like 30 points with of course her practicing on her own as well. I was wondering if anyone could give me specific tips on how to study efficiently, especially if you scored 210 or more. I am aiming high on the PSAT and I am going to put all my effort into it. My hardest section is critical reading. Thanks guys! (:

Also, which prep class is the most worthwhile in preparing for the PSAT? (price wise and content wise) Right now I’m debating over Princeton Review or Kaplan which are both offered close to where I live.

Do not sign up for either class. Read the Important Threads in this forum instead.

I thought that PR online SAT course was very helpful! Also, I suggest using Barron’s Hot Words and PR Hit Parade for vocab improvement.

^those have poor hit sat rates. Use direct hits or essential. You don’t even have to spend money on SAT prep, some of the PDFs are online. Just google it.

Also, there are many SAT vocabulary lists on Quizlet, which has useful study tools.

I’d recommend you try to take as many practice PSATs as you can and analyze why you got certain questions wrong in them. Doing this really helped me improve my score.

Basically just take practice tests and review them. For vocab, direct hits or barron’s is good. Also around where I live, princeton review classes are apparently awful unless you’re in the honor classes. I’ve heard kaplan classes are also good, but prep classes aren’t always necessary to get a good score and can sometimes be a waste of time and money.
