DD’19 is exploring the idea of a speech & theatre education major. I think this is the only subject she would be interested in teaching, if she decides against it she will probably do theatre & public relations rather than teaching. How common is it for a school to have a full-time speech & theatre teacher? Our school does not, but it is a very small school in Iowa. Is this a very difficult area to get a job in?
When you say speech, do you mean elocution or therapy?
I haven’t heard of an elocution teacher in decades. Some schools have debate teams but they are often run by English or history teachers. My kids’ HS offers a couple of theater courses, which are taught by English teachers. It’s a suburban hs of about 1500 students.
Not therapy, but drama/debate type stuff. I may inquire at some colleges if the graduates in that major are actually finding full time teaching jobs in that area. I looked at our state’s teaching jobs website, and at the moment, they all sound like part-time coaching positions.
