have any of you started to realize just how much money you've spent at college on things that are not books? im starting to feel guilty because i've spent about 600$ this semester on things (some of which i dont even know of) from dinners at restaurants, to random shopping, it all adds up. now my main hope is that when i go home for thanksgiving, i get more money...:/ because im officially a poor college student

who else is in my situation?

who is in the opposite (you get money every other week, and go designer shopping whenever you feel like it)? congratulations, and i am jealous of you

Well, I'm not in a financial crunch, but then it's cuz I'm rarely doing any spending for stuff. In fact, the only charges on my credit card are Subway, Subway, more Subway, .....oh and a few other restaurants here and there.

I'm a poor person, so I try to live that way. :(

haha yeah I spend too much constantly. Especially lately for some reason. Seems like I have been hemorrhaging money... :( But at the same time, whatever - money is meant to be spent.

I've spend around... I am gonna throw out a number, around 500 buckaroos a semester. The gas for my car is taking up a large percentage of it. -_-.

I actually haven't spent a whole lot of money that I couldn't be reimbursed by my parents for. Most of the money I've spent is stuff that they've asked me to pick up for them, or medicine, both of which they pay me back for. My mom also seems to have gone from never wanting to give me money to wanting to make sure I'm not broke, so we go shopping for snacks and stuff whenever I'm home, rather than me buying them.
That being said I just haven't had to spend much money this semester, other than books. My friends and I mostly stay on campus, seeing movies in the student union theater, which only cost $2, and some (like the advance showing of Just Friends this Monday) have been free. When we want a change from dining hall food we go to the school food court, where we use our dining dollars, which are part of the meal plan we already paid for. I've done some shopping, but not excessively. I've got roughly the same amount of money as I did when I opened my checking account in July. And I did pay for my own books.

i havent spent a ridiculous amount of money while in college, but i came home and went shopping and spent close to 300 today....thats bc we only have 2 good stores in the area where my school is and i never have time to go shopping...i do end up spending money on food and random stuff though

I spent a lot, relatively speaking, but it's not my incidentals that cost me so much as the cost of living. Of course, I live in an apartment that pays no utilities, so this is unsurprising.

Of the $650 balance on my credit card, about $100 of the charges are non-essential expenses. The rest covers groceries, utilities, textbooks and bus passes.

I had to borrow money from my parents (who can't afford to lend me much) in order to pay rent next month. :/

My spending has been out of control. Including some August expenses, I have spent around $3600 since then. The largest amounts are $740 for gas and car maintenance, $500 for books, and $500+ for new suits and ties. The rest is made up stuff like cell phone, Netflix, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, JCPenneys, ITunes, meals, etc. I would have so much more money if I didn't vending machines, eat take-out, and buy DVDs and the occasstional video game. Using vending machines is major waste of money. And none of this includes the $1500 I had to lend to my parents. But I should be getting $4200 next semester through research stipends and other things. $1100 is still owed to me by my parents. Despite the amount of money I have spent, I still have an okay amount left in my bank account. Nowhere near the thousands that some frugal classmates have but more than the classmates who spend all of their money on alcohol every weekend.

The one comfort is that I will be graduating in June and have already accepted a job offer, so I will be able to start earning decent money immediately (my brother went the whole summer without finding a job)...only to see it go away when I starting paying off my school loans. Right now I can afford to buy books and DVDs without suffering much hardship but when I graduate I will have to be extremely frugal.

my parents give me $30 a week, but I don't spend really money. I don't go shopping, I don't buy clothes, except for the odd tshirt from a campus group, I don't buy video games.

Extra food and drinks on campus can be bought at a store that takes "flex points" which are dollars that come with your meal plan, that are only accepted on campus for food items (and dominoes... 555 deal what? lol). The only place I spend actual money is at Wawa...

my parents pay for my gas on trips home and back to school, b/c my parents don't think I should have to pay to come see them.

since I got to school, I've spent $200, including textbooks. I bought used from upperclassmen =). Other than books, I've spent money on snow boots, a coat, a hat, etc. becuase it's flipping cold here (Pittsburgh), but other than that it's free entertainment like street fairs, campus activities, parties (free if you're female!), and playing in the snow.

Yeah trying to find a job or internship but getting pretty fed up with it all so I'm just going to find volunteer work and just stop spending so much every month. Shouldn't have quit my job last year. Now I can't find a new one that is at least half-decent.

wow, after reading all of this, I feel spoiled. I just swipe everything and my dad pays it lol - I easily must go through $500 or $600 a month on pizza/bars/booze/cloths etc. The only things my parents make me pay for is spring break...and I have a strange feeling I'm getting a wad of cash for that this Christmas.

I have a job, so I'm able to live very comfortably on what I make. I cover all of my incidental expenses while in school. Food, entertainment, BoSox hats, etc. I've managed this without touching my savings from working summer shift. My parents pay for most of my non-entertainment purchases when I am at home. For prohibitively expensive non-academic purchases, we strike deals. I expect more of that and less total coverage in the years to come. Hey, I can't complain, they're fronting my room and board too-- a huge expense.

I've spent about £1,300 (multiply that by 1.8 to get US dollars) this semester, I think. Crap. Then again, I go to college in the second (or is it first?) most expensive city in the world.

Very little of that was spent on fun stuff. Most of it was on food, Tube passes, books, cell phone, etc... I don't know how it adds up so quickly. :(
