This class caught my eye as one of the recommended VLPA courses here. I need something to balance out my schedule, which contains CSE 142 and Math 124, that isn't too difficult. Does anyone know what this class is about and how much work you have to put forth?

Not familiar with the class but have you checked course descriptions?

Sometimes various professors are listed there, you can click on their names to get an idea of what the course is about and workload.

that’s exactly what I took autumn quarter my frosh year (except a different math class). I say go for it! I did only about an hour of work per week on average for the class. It’s pretty much a guaranteed 3.9-4.0 if you listen in class and can make up decent speeches, and it’s fairly interesting.

In a nutshell, the class teaches you about the physiology of speech, how sounds are formed and transformed into oration.

frost_44 - So did you ever register for the class? I just did.

thewu - Could you give more details about the class and instructor? THanks.

I think the instructor is different each quarter, and they may have different requirements. For my class, we had three minor speeches (2-3 minutes) and one major speech (5-7 minutes), and some random small homework assignments.

You will learn about how speech is formed, from how the body controls air, how it directs air and causes sounds, how sounds are formed (from a basic physics point of view), and how sounds are transformed into IPA style pronunciations and speech. I know some other instructors emphasize the speaking curriculum more than the physiology, so you might find yourself making a speech to a 20-30 person class once a week or so.

Overall, a fun and easy class.
