Spirit group question!

I know there are a few threads on spirit groups, but i have 2 specific questions.
1.) Are we allowed to try for more than one spirit group or is it limited to one?
2.) Also, I am leaning between Lonestars, Sweethearts, and Spirits...which one would I have a better chance at?

Thanks! :)

You can try out for as many as you’d like each semester. I know Lonestars only recruits in the fall, though, whereas Spirits, Sweethearts, and Lassos recruit in the spring and fall semesters. You have nothing to lose by trying out for all of them at once if you want to! Each organization has a different dynamic and a different group of girls, so there’s nothing wrong with going to information sessions for each to see which ones suit your personality best. And for the most part, each organization knows which girls are trying out for which ones, but that’s okay, too. I’m not sure about the other groups, but Spirits doesn’t discriminate against girls just because they’re trying out for other organizations.

Each semester, recruitment for spirit groups seems to get more and more competitive, so it’s hard to answer your second question. The best advice I can give you is to not shy away from trying out or submitting an application simply because of the numbers–you have just as good a shot as any other girl trying out! Just go through recruitment, be genuine, and have a great time. Good luck!

whats the process of getting into one of these groups? they sound fun! and whats the difference between this and a sorority?

Mjb13- Thank you! I’ve talked to you once before about spirit groups! You have so much info! You are a Spirit right? Will I be able to meet you at any of the info sessions this fall? :)

Allypaige95- Yess! They do look super fun! They are kinda like a sorority but they aren’t…they have that sorority feel! I can’t wait until I am finally able to try-out.

Spirit groups are a great alternative to Greek Life. Bbylonghorn15 is right in that spirit groups have a sorority-type feel because we are all big female organizations that are actively involved on campus, hold social events, and are involved in community service and philanthropy. I think one of the best differences is the fee! To be in a sorority here at UT, it costs about $3000-$4000 your first year and then $2000 each year for the next 3 years you are a member, but for spirit groups, the fee is MUCH lower. I am a Texas Sweetheart, and the fee is only $275 your first semester (which includes everything!).

I remember being so nervous when I applied for Sweethearts and other spirit groups when I was a freshman, so I totally understand where yall are coming from! I would definitely recommend going to each spirit group’s information sessions and recruitment events and seeing which one you feel like you would fit in with the most.

I know at our info sessions, you get a chance to meet all 130 of our active members and get to talk with them about their experiences as a Texas Sweetheart which will really give you a feel for what we’re all about and if you think you would like to join. The application process for most of the spirit groups involves a few short answer questions, a creative project, and then a second round (each spirit group differs on how their second round works). Many girls get the application at the info sessions and end up feeling like they don’t have time to fill it out/do the project and turn it in or they are simply just discouraged because there are so many girls at these info sessions, but definitely don’t let these things get in your way! I was in your shoes just a couple years ago, and I know how it feels, but trust me, it’s SO worth it in the end! No matter which spirit group you end up applying for, you will be so happy that you put out the effort in the end! Good luck to both of you with everything!!

@Bbylonghorn15- I am! And I will be at pretty much every Spirits recruitment event, so I hope to see you all there!

@alypaige95- As tlbtexas13 mentioned, joining a spirit group is a lot less expensive than most sororities, and as you’ve probably guessed, our recruitment process is a little different. The first round Texas Spirits application includes some questions and a project in which you tell us about yourself. The second round includes interviews and several opportunities at which you can talk to Spirits one-on-one, so that we get to know you even better. It’s a really fun process–as nervous as I was, I enjoyed every minute of it! It also allowed me to get to know a lot of the girls who would join my pledge class.

Definitely attend info sessions for the groups that interest you and GO to the meet-and-greet events–you can get an even better feel for what an organization is about by getting to know the girls who are in it, and it’s a lot less scary talking to one or two girls at a time than it is to face all of us at once! Also, each organization has a Facebook page and (I think) everyone has a Recruitment group in which you can get updates on upcoming events, so you might want to check those out, too!

thanks for the info! Ill only be a senior in highschool next year, but when i do go to UT, i will definitely attend the info session!:)

I didn’t know about spirit groups until I went through rush and now I’m in a small sorority. Is it ok if I still try for a spirit group because I’d really like to get with one!!
