Spop

So I heard there's an event called SPOP for incoming freshmen at UCI, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly happens here (including spoilers) so that I can make sure if I do want to go here or not?

Thank you in advance!

I’m an incoming freshman as well, but as far as I can tell, it’s going to be something UCI hosts to get you all excited. Its a whole mess of “icebreaker” activities, late nights, and just fun stuff. IDK, I’m going.

Yes, It seems like we get to do some activities with current students and then stay over at the dorms with other incoming freshmen and experience what college living is like.

i would really like to know what goes on at spop too. any current freshmen wanna weigh in?

Don’t we HAVE to go to SPOP? Like, we register for classes and stuff there, don’t we?

I think I’m going to the third one, since I’m out-of-state, and going during the weekday would be inconvenient for my parents.

Found info here[/url”>http://www.dos.uci.edu/orientation/]here. Different than the Discover UCI thing going on the next few weeks. I think it is mandatory, and also a bit freaky that we have to pay, but whatever. Government’s broke, who can blame them xP

I’m pretty sure it’s mandatory but I’m kind of looking forward to it. I heard that’s also when we register for classes and something about it being 2 days 1 night, and teachers get together and perform for us (or something along those lines?) not totally sure though

It’s a lot of fun. I remember that I was legitimately excited for school to start afterward.

A tip: go to the earliest SPOP date possible. You register for classes at SPOP, and going earlier will ensure that you can choose the best time and date for each class.

I think I remember reading somewhere that CHP kids got priority registration, at least for some classes. Would you happen to know how that works? (Thanks.)

Once you get there, there’s a big meeting in which the Dean addresses the students. Then you separate into different majors. Afterwards, you’re assigned to your hall (the people you stay with overnight). Basically, at first it’s kind of boring and tedious since you sign up for classes and listen to what the people have to say. Then the spop leaders who are typically 4th years do a bunch of fun activites for the students to enjoy. There’s a couple games that get pretty personal and such, but overall it’s pretty fun.

*sidenote: keep up with your grades and make sure to notify uci if you receive at D’s or F’s. Around 200 students came to spop last year only to be told that they couldn’t join in the festivities and that they were no longer students at uci because of the failed classes and such.

Do you think they will make an exception for international students (for the first come first serve policy of class registration) I would love to come in July but it is in the middle of my summer, I would have to come for like two days and go back to my country afterwards :(

CHP students do get priority registration. The first quarter, however, is an exception; you will register for classes during SPOP with everyone else, so it’s best to go to the earliest SPOP possible.

GO! Getting out of your comfort zone and becoming more social those days will definitely be a nice way to get you into the college mood. You can end up meeting your new best friend at SPOP.

They don’t force everyone to go though, and it would definitely be too costly if you’re an international student. >.<

@jamesbball911 or anyone who can elaborate…what do you mean when you say games can get pretty personal?

Does class registration happen on the first or second day? Does anyone know what time it would end the second day (i.e. morning, noon, the whole day)?

The games that get “personal” are more like activities… not games.

We played a “game” called ‘Cross the Line’, basically everyone stands in a room, and there is a line in the middle. One of the staffers then says "Cross the line if _______ " (e.g. If you’ve been a victim of sexual harrassment or if you’re involved in fighting for gay rights, etc. etc.)

This is just one game where I guess it gets personal. PERSONALLY, as a guy, I don’t find it comfortable when we take part in these kinds of “games”, where we deal with our emotions and talk about our feelings… I just wanted to go play some bball :].

@cacophonous, registration happened on the first day if I remember correctly… yep.
It ends around the afternoon the second day.

Do they do academic advising before you register? Or are you supposed to scour the online course info until you know all the classes you want to take, and then just register?

Once you split up into your majors, the counselors will hold a presentation (or even do 1 on 1 advising, depending on how many kids are in your major) about scheduling and which classes are advised to take for the fall quarter.

If you’re in BIO, there might be a long line for registering for classes, since it will be held at one computer-lab, which can only hold like 30-40 students at a time.

yeah this was weird… I don’t mind talking about my emotions and what not, but not with a huge group of people i met 2 hours ago…

@junshik

I assume the bus. admin group will be quite small. Since GEs are so scattered, how do they “recommend” certain classes to take for the fall quarter? Will they have access to your AP credits and etc.? Do you remember what time it started and ended?
