SPORT(internationals)

Hi fellow CCers, straight to the point. For all of us international students, we don't play much bball, nfl, lacrosse etc. Does that mean we can't play these sports and are thus, confined to track, soccer and the like? Personally, I would probably do track anyway, but just out of curiosity, how does the sports teams system work? Are there multiple teams for a sport in one age group? And what exactly do "varsity" and "junior varsity" mean? Sorry for my ignorance. Australia is a long way off:P And I've got a few less than satisfactory explanations from a few google searches>< THANKS!:D

Don’t shy away from BS sports because you have never played. In fact, BS is a good place to pick up and learn a new sport. There are various levels from beginner to varsity. Varsity being the highest level of play. Many sports such as crew, hand ball, fencing, water polo to name just a few, are sports that get a lot of walk ons. Schools want their students to stay physically active and will help you find a sport that fits you.

First I’ll explain how sports work:

Varsity - (highest level of play as maddog mentioned, predominantly juniors and seniors, couple of sophmores, maybe even a freshman)

Junior Varsirty - (2nd highest level of play, preparing players for Varsity. Sophmores, couple juniors, some freshman, and maybe even a senior if he/she is recovering from an injury)

Third - (Not all schools have this, but 3rd highest level of play. Equivalent to a freshman team but for sophmores you can’t crack JV)

Freshman - (A team fielded of ONLY freshman to play other freshman.)

When you find Fourths and Fifths the school is usually 7-12 or something like that, so the MS kids can play other MS kids.

From my understanding, they make very few cuts for Freshman, so BS is an ideal place to start a new sport!
