Hi,

I will be a senior next year and have been doing cross country since freshmen year. I don't think I will be getting varsity and I was wondering if I should do it for a 4th year - not sure if colleges want me to look like I stayed committed.

Honestly, Id rather not do another year of it, especially because I don't like it. I'm taking a lot of rigorous classes and not sure if I should do it between all the stress. If it really makes a difference on the college app, then I will tough it out anyway.

Thanks

If you don’t like it, don’t do it. If you have time, you can replace it with some other activity. I know that everybody and their brother on College Confidential says, “Colleges like to see commitment,” and I’ll certainly agree that commitment is good, but colleges also like to see people be willing to try something new. My own daughter, who entered high school wanting to be the star of the spring musical, finally decided in the eleventh grade that she wasn’t making and headway in drama. She’d discovered that she did have a real aptitude for languages, so she quit the spring musical and enrolled in Arabic at the community college. She got into college just fine.

If you need the time to study, don’t do it. Grades matter much more.

Thanks. Any other thoughts?
