Sports as a Passion/Hook?

I am by no means an exceptional athlete and don’t pretend to be. But i do have a deep passion for sports. I have played basketball throughout high school (9-12, varsity 11-12) and run varsity cross country (10-12, captain 12). In addition, I have attended overnight basketball camps for the past 6 summers and have held down a 7-hour-per-week Comunity Recreation basketball job (about 4 months each winter) for 3 years. I have also run in several town races, placing very well in some of them. While I have become very proficient in these sports, however, I have no illusions of playing competively in college (afterall, even D3 basketball can be very challenging for someone who is only 5’4" with shoulder instability, but i digress.) Basically, my question is Can I use sports as my hook/passion even if i’m not talented enough to pursue it in college (besides perhaps, on the intramural level)?

Thank you very much for your input.

It's a passion, but not a hook.

I thought having a passion was a hook. Not for hypaweriou but for many other schools.

hypaweriou? way too long

what does the "aweriou" stand for?

... I was just mocking the long list of "top schools" people are so eager to apply to. I meant "not for ivy league or top schools". Okay? better? :)

yeah. i needed that

BigE1508 i had the same love of sports that you did and i believe that was my hook. I did cross country, wrestling, and track in their respective seasons and karate year round. In my opinion, it was the reason I got into so many amazing schools. I showed I had a deep passion for sports through my essays and resume and it worked out in the end

Cool. Where'd you get in?

Stanford, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, Cornell, Wash U, and a bunch on other schools. I applied to alot. I am going to Stanford next year.

Very impressive. Congrats. How were your stats?

An informal dedication to sports may not count as a hook but it will give you points in the good fit column. At small LACs it is especially important for kids to fit with the culture so your interest in sports would help you a sports-minded schools like Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Hamilton, Colgate, Trinity, Kenyon.

Stanmaster's given you good advice: let your enthusiasm shine through in your essays and resume.
