hi!
just out of curiosity- how does the sport thing work at brown?
can someone just join a team or you had to have played in high school?

There are intramural sports that anyone on campus can join at any level of play in a huge variety of sports.

I’m pretty sure it depends on the sport and you would have to contact the coach. Not all of the athletes are recruited, a lot are walk ons. I would contact the coach of whatever sport you play and see what he/she says.

ok, thanks so much!

you need to be careful about your expectations for varsity sports. A lot of people do indeed walk on, but the competition level is extremely intense.

I’ve heard that crew, which is big at Brown, takes a lot of walk-ons, especially women’s crew. But I’d guess you would have to be a very good athlete in general, and a body type suited to it perhaps.

My daughter was on 3 varsity teams in HS, but didn’t go on any team at Brown, even intramural or club, because of academic overload, self-inflicted. Just did casual tennis and biking with friends. But she is now doing intramural at grad school.

Ok, here is a really silly question, but I swear I have tried and tried to find the answer via website and google searches. What are Brown’s ‘school colors’? I can’t discern from my computer screen and on our visit, I couldn’t really tell in the bookstore. Are they black and red? Brown and red? or brown and orange???

Brown and Red. It’s pretty clear considering it’s the color of our seal, most of our printed material, the entire webpage, on Wikipedia, on Admission ([Brown Admission: Facts & Figures](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)), etc.

Thank you, modestmelody! I swear I had clicked on all those pages, searched “school colors”, and checked for spirit wear (which only came in black or red) on the website and googled “Brown University school colors”. Asked Kiddo, who thought colors were black and red. On my computer screen, nothing shows brown about Brown. I don’t know where the viewbooks, etc. went off to around home. Obviously, I missed the ‘magic words’ for the search engines.

Ohmygoodness! HOW many times have I visited the page you linked me to!! So very embarrassed, but glad to know the answer.

I really was embarrassed to ask because I knew I should have been able to find it myself. But, finally just decided to endure the embarrassment and actually receive the answer from one of you kind students. :)

It’s on the brown wikipedia page as seal brown, cardinal red, and white

I’m just giving you a hard time. No worries. We’ve all had those moments.

Varsity equestrian team…yeah! How exciting! (and, so that I can actually be answer the OP’s question…web searches say you can even join this team without having ridden before…kind of scary, but…that’s what it says).

OK, got that excitement out of my system.

My D’s interviewer mentioned that MOST kids get involved with Crew in some way or another. Lots just for fun, in organized actitivies, etc. I’ve frequently heard there is room on Crew teams at many Ivies without experience…just an aptitude. Several ability levels, I believe.

From my experience, most kids do not get involved with crew.

There is a HUGE hill that the crew team runs up for practice. I haven’t driven by it in years; there used to be writing on the pavement.

Oh look, here’s a photo of them working out: [Photo: Running the hills by Brown University - Projo 7 to 7 News Blog | Rhode Island news | The Providence Journal](http://newsblog.projo.com/2009/11/photo-running-the-hills-by-bro.html)

I have no idea what you mean by “most kids get involved with crew”. Crew and rugby are definitely popular “walk-on” sports, but very few people overall are involved in both.

I was actually thinking about soccer, but considering the fact that in the mean time brown is just a dream, so is their soccer team =)
