I was wondering, is it possible to join the soccer team at a varsity level without prior team experience and recommendations? Are only recruited athletes eligible for varsity sports?

Also, is crew available at the IM level? Because from the website, it seems that it isn’t but on the college board website I’ve read that it is?

For soccer without prior team experience it will not happen. In fact club team experience at a high level is needed. Just playing for your high school will almost certainly not be close
to the level needed.

I should have mentioned that there is also club soccer at Brown. I expect that this might also be played at a high level. These players will not have been recruited to play club soccer. I suspect that 30 years ago some of these players would have played varsity but now varsity athletes are heavily recruited by ivy league schools and even some LACs.

you can always just show up for try outs, once you get in try to contact the coach and just let him know you would be interested as a walk on.

Pretty sure crew is only varsity. Though technically, men’s crew IS club (just because it’s not NCAA, because of Title IX issues… women’s crew is NCAA). But even this “club” crew competes at an extremely high level. However, crew is one of the sports where athletic walk-ons, even with no prior crew experience, can make a contribution.

Does anyone know why the Brown equestrian team would be restricted to women?
At least that is the way it is listed on the Brown web site.
This is a sport that men and women can compete in together. Certainly at the Olympics but also at the professional level. Is this for title IX issues or because most people on the east coast think of riding as a women’s sport?
