Sports Business Initiative!

Can anyone please explain this to me? I know there is a website, but it is very vague. I’m going to Wharton and might be the biggest sports fan ever, so I’m wondering how available this program is to undergrads and what kind of jobs (if any) this program can eventually lead (or has led) to.

bump....anyone, its been a while

i see that theres

http://ugsportsbusiness.com/index.html
http://wsbc.wharton.upenn.edu/
http://wsb.wharton.upenn.edu/index.htm

does anyone, possibly a penn student, know about how good these programs are...like would it be good to get involved in them......does 'sports management' from wharton lead to job opps? or are these programs too underdeveloped to be considered useful

as far as i'm aware it's more of an mba-level thing, with little undergraduate involvement unless it's for a class project.

I was scanning through Google, checking for links to http://www.ugsportsbusiness.com when I came across this thread. My name is Mike Paolini, and I am president of the Undergraduate Sports Business Club. As our website (sort of) says, we organize events with people in the sports business industry and help get students jobs and internships in sports. We also work to show people what the sports industry is like. This is done by having them help work a game for Penn athletics, or one of the minor teams in the Philadelphia area, such as the Phantoms(hockey) or the Soul(arena football). Feel free to email me any questions you have about the club at jpaolini@wharton.upenn.edu and/or I can talk to you in person at Penn.

mike....how much time does the undergrad club take...i am an athlete so i will have practice very often and be traveling on weekends.....and also, as the pres of the club, are u planning on getting a job in sports, and what types of jobs are most members of the club looking for....i just don't really know how possible it seems to get a job in sports, how well it pays, security u get, etc

Taking advantage of the club's services takes little to no time at all. We do the leg work in setting up events where you can learn more about career paths and internships in sports. We set up externships with local sports organizations. We collect information on internship opportunities and send it out to you. We will also research contacts for summer jobs and internships outside of the Philadelphia area.

I am unsure if I will be working in sports. It is definitely a possibility, but I don't want to go into the job market ruling anything out as of yet. In general, entry level positions in sports do not pay as well as some positions in other fields. This is the discount you have to take for working a job that you love. Higher level positions will certainly pay well enough to provide security. I don't want to go into an incredible amount of detail about the pros and cons of the various paths you could take, as it would be a lengthy, difficult process to properly convey the nuances on an online forum. If you are interested in learning more, which it seems you are, I would be more than happy to meet with you at Penn and talk about the sports industry.
