How much do sports weigh-in on a college decision? I’ve done Varsity Cheerleading for the last 3 years and next year I am a very viable candidate for captain. That being said, I am deeply unhappy. People were consistently mean and a lot of nasty backstabbing happened. I won’t be happy continuing with this but 4 year varsity plus a leadership position would look really great on college apps. Will not doing cheer affect my admissions in any way? Thanks!
I didn’t do Varsity Tennis this year due to scheduling and I think I’ll be fine as long as I explain the situation to them. For me, classes took precedence over sports and so that’s why I chose what I did. Would 4 years of tennis seem great to colleges? Of course, but doing something to please any college is not worth it, especially if you’re unhappy. So my advice is to not worry about it and do what is best for your happiness.
This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you!
This will not hurt you in any way. Use the time to up your test scores, maintain or raise your gpa, get into new or an existing activity a bit more…You don’t have to defend your choice to leave cheer leading, rather emphasize the other things you do and what you have learned from them and how you have grown, perhaps find a different opportunity to demonstrate leadership in or outside of school.
Just like any varsity sport, unless you are a recruited athlete moving out of the sport won’t hurt you – especially if you can find another activity (one that is more pleasant/meaningful to you or possibly a part time job) to replace it.
It might have an effect if you were looking to be recruited- but if that isn’t the case, then I wouldn’t worry.
