Hello I just would like some information on the sports management major: is it a good major, what kind of careers does it offer, how well does it pay. I would also like to know some schools that have a good reputation for sports management.
thanks!

My 16 year old son is considering a Sports Management major.
Here’s what my research tells me so far:
- There are 2 different approaches to the major. Some schools seem to have a heavy coaching slant, with lots of Phys. Ed coursework. Those apparently prepare you for jobs in the coaching field.
Others have more of a business slant, apparently to prepare you for management positions.
Probably the easiest way to tell one from the other is to see which school of the college carries the major-- the School of Business or the Kinesiology (sp?) school.
Also, a number of schools will allow you to minor in SM with a major in some other field, like Marketing or Management. That might allow you to hedge your bets a little in case you change your mind down the road.
- Everything I've read and heard tells me that the upper tier jobs-- working in the Pros-- are incredibly competitive. (Consider the number of Pro teams in the country, figure that each has, what, 200 people max in management??) But the major can also prepare you to work in college programs, in high school programs, and in a variety of local fields.
We’re in NY-- what part of the country are you looking at?
Take a look at the internships at the schools you consider. They’re bound to be a huge part of being a strong job candidate down the road.
Well I’m from California so I would prefer a school near the west coast, but I also love the east coast so I wouldn’t find going to school back east.
Tahnks
Well, I know absolutely nothing about CA schools, but Google got me started here:

also, consider contacting http://www.cosmaweb.org/list-of-accredited-programs.html for suggestions.
What I’ve read tells me that the key to this particular major may very well be in the internships. Take a good, hard look at them, contact the schools and ask to see where their SM students have interned.
Hope that helps!
