I was just wondering which one would be better for college. I'm thinking about trying for lax next year, but there's practice every single day after school, including Saturday. And if I decided to do lax, I wouldn't be able to do academic clubs. So so far these are my 2 options;
Athletics;
Fall XC
Winter Track
Spring Lax

Clubs;
MUN
Student Council
Newspaper
OM

I'm also Asian, and somebody mentioned that it's better for Asian's to do athletics to prove that we aren't the stereotypical nerd.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance :)

Sports, in the long run, are much better. I really wish I was good at a sport because that can get you a full ride to a pretty decent school or a pretty packed scholarship. If you love a sport and really want to focus on it and can play really well, sports are the way to go. My older brother wasn’t really the academics type but was really good at soccer and ended up getting a full ride because of that.

But that’s only in an either/or scenario - both are great (and I’m slightly bias but I think MUN is the best club :P) So stick with MUN, try to win awards, do lacrosse/track/cross country and try to join a few honor societies as you go on and you’ll be fine.

Clubs generally offer more output per input than clubs, but really, no college is going to care to much about either choice, so really, just focus on what makes you happy.

@Apollo11 Wait what offers more output per input?

What I mean to say is that for the amount of effort that you’ll spend, sports offers less return in the eyes of colleges, on average [i.e if you aren’t Division I caliber] than most clubs.

Are you any good at those sports? It’s unlikely if you are just starting in high school that you’ll be good enough to get a scholarship, and those sports split scholarships into teeny tiny pieces, especially to freshmen. At my daughter’s high school, there are 11 female seniors and 2 have scholarships (no where near ‘full ride’) and I believe 15 male players with 1 playing in college. I think there is one track athlete (pole vault) participating in college.

It’s unlikely either the sports or clubs are going to be a hook for you, so do what you like.

I’m the fastest girl runner for xc in my middle school right now, and I expect to make varsity xc next year. I’m above average at track, and average at lax. I’m not too interested in scholarships, just what it would look like on my ec list @twoinanddone

@angelacao

Even if you were the fastest runner on your high school xc team, odds are, the most you’d ever be [and this isn’t to be rude, but pragmatic] is the captain of your team. Unless you feel that you might go to States/Regionals/Nationals for something, you’d effectively be spending 15+ hours a week on essentially being viewed the same as a President of a club that spent 1 hour per week on their club.

@Apollo11 That’s true… although my high school xc team is pretty slow. I think I could beat 99% of them, at least from what I’ve heard. Im starting to wonder if maybe i did fall and spring sports, all the clubs, but not a winter sport? Then I could focus on academics during the winter season?

@angelacao, the big thing is that most sports take up so much time that you have to make compromises elsewhere. If you don’t think that’s the case, then go for a sport, but otherwise, don’t.

But that’s just it. If you aren’t going to play for a college, then it’s not a hook, just an EC. The admissions office doesn’t really care if you play lax or do MUN, just that you are doing something. The coach will never know you exist unless you contact the coach and let him know you are interested.

My daughter does have a lax scholarship. It was a lot of work to get noticed. She played on a club team and I don’t know of anyone who gets a scholarship unless she played club.

But you are 14. You don’t know what all your interests are going to be. That’s why I say do what you want to do. If you like running, run. If you like government, do MUN.

Well said.
