good idea to post links to pictures: just check out a few of CATS because our makeup was awesome!!

VTBroadwayBaby

Great pics as well !!! It is such a joy to put in the hard work and have a ball doing it.

The makeup was such a time consuming part of CATS. The kids had a professional makeup artist come in to teach them how to do it themselves.
EC Glass was the first non-professional group in the world allowed to do CATS. We sold 8000 tickets for 6 shows.
My son can be seen in the pictures of Proof (the only boy not an adult) and The Complete History of America-Abridged. He was Bill Bailey in CATS and one of the Jets in West side Story.

thats very cool! all of our makeup was airbrushed. some of the parents did it, actually, an i think they are pretty skilled!! it just took FOREVER! our makeup calls for the 8pm show started at 3:20 and people went in shifts....some nights they were still working on people right up until curtain!

Thats really quite an honor! We were told we were the largest cast in a community theatre production of cats...we had a lot of people!!

My d's school did Beauty and the Beast in February and she was Mrs Potts. They did a fantastic job, the only bad part about it (for us) was the timing! It really put a crimp in her college auditions! Here's a link to pictures if anyone would like to see!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/erincrosswell
just so no one gets confused, two separate girls played Belle on alternating nights! the first pics my d is in are on page 3!

i love reading what everyone else is doing. I know my rehearsals are the only thing keeping me off of my email, this website, and glaring at my mailbox even if i know the mailman already came. Im doing anything goes and im playing reno. Its fun to play roles that really broaden your expirience, cause i originally was strictly a soprano, and eventually started belting, but reno really exercises my lower ranger. Its fun and isnt going up until early may, and then in June we also do a 'tony style' award ceremony with like 25 schools and hopefully, this will be my 4th year in a row being nominated (if i am) i can FINALLY win one. lol. i know your not supposed to be insanely competitive about this cause its what i love to do, not what i love to compete in, but after four years of beign nominated and losing, you are REALLY eager to take the award home lol. : ).

NanE

Great pics ! I't always nice to see pictures of the crew and pit as well. They never seem to get as much credit but they work just as hard, and I would argue that the crew works longer than the cast. It looks like a fun show to do.

VTBroadwayBaby

I hear you on the timeframe. I think everyone in the cast had grades going down during the show. I think they would say "well worth it".
The part that always amazes me at my sons musicals is the pit. The kids are so very good.
We had some in the original cast come see it and some directors. After that we were offered to be the first to do Phantom of the Opera when it's done on Broadway.

bwaychic

(I can't believe I'm talking to a chic, a baby, and a nanE all at once lol)

What part of CT? I grew up there and miss it sometimes

Where are you all waiting to hear from?

i just took a break from making lion king costumes to come check the board.

NanE~ I like the pictures! the show looks great...nice set, and it was nice to see who ur daughter is.

rand- thats really great that the school is going to be doing phantom of the opera when it comes available. next summer, assuming the rights come out, we're doing Les Mis in my area....can't wait!!

im waiting to hear from every single one of my schools: syracuse, nyu, hartt, and BoCo. i wish i could've applied to more, but im a transfer...and, uh, funds are limited. :P

i love that people are posting pictures!! it's really tremendous!!

It is such funny hearing about all of your shows and seeing all these great pictures!

NanE...looks like a wonderful production of Beauty and the Beast. Love your D as Mrs. Potts. I also like how the photos included those working backstage in other roles that are so important to a show. It is nice that it seems like there are official photos for this show. My husband always takes a zillion photos of D's shows and then cast members all want copies. It becomes a big production with the photos.

VTBroadwayBaby....love your CATS production. What a great accomplishment for the community theater. Love the pictures of you and your "beau" cat. Yes, the student run musicals my D did was a big undertaking but went over very well in the community (your old school). She is now involved in student run musicals in college too.

Randc...wow on the photos of West Side Story and Cats. I am wondering if this is a performing arts high school? It seems like it would be as there is a Nutcracker production and also appears to have many kids who can dance, etc. unlike a typical public high school. The productions look great. I love West Side Story, such a classic. My D played Anita in that at her summer theater camp and is glad when she has had chances to be in the classics which all theater kids should do at some point.

Bwaychic...congrats on playing Reno. What a great role. Enjoy every minute.

Defy_Yourself.....cool about Sound of Music. Another classic that I love. Max is a great role. Break a leg.

WMonMTDad...Barnaby in Hello Dolly is also a terrific role. Good luck to your son in this production. Enjoy seeing one of his last local ones!

DramaLady....MallMart? That is one I have never heard of. Any relation to Walmart? LOL It is cool to be working on new works that are not as known. Good luck with it.

Judy....if you have read the forums this year, Urinetown was BIG at so many schools and colleges. Really fun show. I saw it on Broadway. Kudos to your son on stage managing!

NYDanceMom, I would be crying buckets too! Between that particular song and the last high school musical, oy. My D's last high school musical was Oklahoma and she was rehearsing as Ado Annie. However, two years ago around this time, following her final college audition, she was very injured in a car crash and so was out of ALL of her final year musicals and dance performances and so there were no "lasts" to attend that spring. :( So, enjoy yours!

I made a mistake when I said our HS's spring musical was Lucky Stiff. I had read that a while back. I am so out of the school loop now that my kids are out of the system. I JUST read in the local paper that the spring musical instead is Anyone Can Whistle by Sondheim. Glad to see them doing Sondheim again. My D was in Into the Woods freshman year. Then they did some traditional musicals for three years.

Sooooo much talent on this forum. Wow! Putting all you guys together would make an awesome cast and/or BFA program! :D

sigh...i was almost in this very production, but i had to move!! but, man, your D was absolutely the best little red ever!!

I didn't realize you saw my daughter's production of Into the Woods in ninth grade, VTBroadwayBaby. Thank you for the compliment. It was a good production. My D loves that musical. This past fall she musically directed it at Tisch and played piano and conducted the small orchestra. I wish you guys could have worked together. Funny to "meet" you now here.

My D's school does their major musical in the fall - it was Aida. Currently she is rehearsing for the full length ballet that they do in the spring (PA school with a classical ballet program). They are doing Alice in Wonderland for the ballet. She is "cook" for her primary role and a daisy for her corps role.

We have a very unique public high school. In addition to the drama department, we have kids that take their academic classes at our school, but attend Virginia School of the Arts which is a boarding school that specializes in dance. The kids at VSA are allowed to take acting classes and be in shows at our school and they are do participate as dancers in the big shows. It works out very well for both parties.
Our auditorium is professional quality and seats 2200. We also have a blackbox theatre that seats 150 depending on the setup.
The community supports the arts at the high school like nowhere I have seen before. It takes a lot to build a program like the one my son has been blessed to be a part of.
OK, I am done boasting LOL

VTBroadwayBaby

Good luck on your schools!
My son is focusing on Acting only although he will be taking dance and voice.
I give you MT guys soooo much credit. Not only do you have to audition for departments, you have to have the grades to get into the schools as well.

randc...sounds like an ideal set up at your school. Great to have a school that supports the arts. Our small public also supports the arts. However, when I saw the photos showing dancers in Nutcracker and even in West Side, it didn't look like a normal group of high school students in terms of dance ability (I mean from a regular public school, as opposed to we have great dancers at our dance studio outside of school). So, now it makes sense that dancers from an arts boarding school participate in your school productions. Still, great to see quality productions. You even have a THEATER DEPARTMENT at your school. WE don't have that here. We have a very good music department. We also put on one play and one musical per year and bring in an outside professional director (Equity, formerly on Broadway) to put them on. Your school obviously has a lot going on in theater and that is really wonderful. Good luck to your son on his acting admissions outcome.

soozie-
i was actually CAST in that production of into the woods while i was at that school. i was going to play jack's mother. i rehearsed for about two weeks with everybody, but then i found out my family had decided to move back to FL....so i had to leave in the middle of the show. another girl took over my part...but i remember doing those first few music rehearsals, and your daughter sounded so good!!

Amy

soozievt...

"My husband always takes a zillion photos of D's shows and then cast members all want copies. It becomes a big production with the photos."

Ditto...but I made a breakthough last year. I upload them to shutterfly or printroom and email links to interested parties. they can pick and choose and order whatever they want. And of course, in the age of digital photography I upload all but the worst shots (you never know what might be important or significant to someone else even if grainy or blurred). No more printing pictures/burning CDs, etc.

"Barnaby in Hello Dolly is also a terrific role. Enjoy seeing one of his last local ones!"

Very sentimental for us. S was in the chorus 4 years ago when the community theatre did it. He really wanted Barnaby then but was just too young. First true exposure to "real" choreography and he took to it like a fish to water. Halfway through the run he came in for call to find out there had been a problem with another cast member and they threw him into the ensemble for the Grand Valse with 30 minutes notice. That experience and the response he got encouraged him to pursue this passion for real. Now 4 years later he's closing this phase and launching out on the dream on the same show. I noted that this production is at our local University. He's the only HS student in the show; the other principals went to jr/srs/graduate students in the program there. I'm very proud of him. You almost couldn't script a story better than that.

thats a really really great story WMonMTDad!!!im so glad u shared!!

Amy, geez, now I remember that and about a talented "new" girl in the cast and who then couldn't do the show! Too bad but you are now doing well. The show came out really great. Wish you had been a part of it.

WMonMTDad...that is a great story to come full circle with that same musical! Very cool that your son is in a college production. When my daughter was 10, she got to be in a college production and it was such a great experience. She later went on to do that same musical (theater camp production) as the lead. But being in with the college kids as a theater-lovin' kid was quite the experience.

I don't have a story as good as yours. But yours reminded me a bit of "coming full circle" with a show. My D was to be Ado Annie in Oklahoma her last year of high school (she was a junior graduating a year early) and was in rehearsals when a few weeks prior to the performances, she was very injured in a car accident and so was unable to do the show. Now, this semester at college, in her musical scene study class, she was assigned with a partner to do the "All or Nothing" number/scene and so got to at least perform as Ado Annie after all, having never gone on in the part she was cast in originally.

[/quote]

oh, you flatter, you really do ;)

it was a shame to have to leave the show. i esp. was good friends with Julian...and the funny thing is, after i came back to Vermont again, i saw him @ castleton...and he is still doing a lot of theatre & music. so thats nice.

your story is nice too, and i think stuff like that always happens. and usually, after something negative happens (such as you don't get in a show, etc. )
the next thing that comes along is so much better for you, and it turns out that things were meant to be. this isn't the case in your daughters situation, but thats what has happened to me most often with shows.
