Spring Musicals

oh ps: did your D ever do I Cantori @ school? I did that while I was there, but I couldn't recall if she was in that or just in chorus?

My High School is doing "The Wizard of Oz" and i'm playing Dorothy and am the assistant director/Lighting Designer : )

My D's show loads in the Opera House today! They are doing Guys and Dolls; my D is Miss Adelaide (she is so cute in this roll). I just left there and they were hanging the backdrops - our Hot Box is amazing! I've got to hurry back to see the rest of the stage's transformation! Of course I had to take time out to check CC. I can not wait to see my d in her senior performance.

simplywicked

You must be very talented. Three totally different jobs, and all in the same show! I bet each gives you a different perspective on the others. Post some pictures if you can later.

Amy, yes, my daughter was in I Cantori. I have to say, however, that while I Cantori was nice in that it consisted of the best singers at school, the a capella music chosen was not always too exciting. When older D (not the BFA one) went off to Brown and discovered college a capella (and we visited and watched ourselves), it was a whole new world of what a capella groups can be. It was NOTHING like I Cantori! I only wish Di could see what a capella can really be these days. My younger D also visited older D's college and was enamoured with the fab a capella groups. In fact, in her last year of high school, she choreographed a tap dance to a recording put out by one of Brown's a capella groups (actually, the day of her accident ,she was coming from choreographing this piece at the dance studio). Then, when she got to college, she was so psyched to try out for this really good coed a capella group at NYU and got in. She is very into this group and is also musical directing and arranging, besides performing in it. They are getting ready to compete in the Northeast Semi Finals of Collegiate A Capella. I have attended concerts and competitions and I just wish Di back at high school could get some inspiration into a capella. I have even now seen high school groups in other states and again, nothing like I Cantori. I am not talking talent but rather the style of music, etc.

I haven't seen Julian in a while (you know he played Jack)...the next year he was scarecrow when my D was Dorothy in Wizard of Oz. He was in my D's inaugral student run production, the cabaret she created. He was great.

I agree with you that yucky stuff happens in life, and in fact, lots of it can happen in the life of an actor, and those who make it are able to pick themselves up and keep pushing on and often good things happen at another point in time. Setbacks are unpleasant, but if one can look at the big picture and keep their sites on the goal....things tend to work out, possibly in new ways that they wouldn't have.

Simplywicked....when my D played Dorothy, she felt it was one of those roles that every young actress should do at some point (kinda like Annie). Enjoy....what a classic. And with that in mind....all those stressed out applicants need to keep in mind "Somewhere Over the Rainbow....." Dreams eventually do come true, even if you have to wait longer than expected for them to happen, or have to take many twists an turns in the yellow brick road.

Les Mis....sounds like your D is another of the very talented kids I am reading about on this forum! Break a leg to her! Adelaide is a role my D always has wanted to play. It turns out that her high school did Guys and Dolls last year, which was her senior year but she graduated a year early and went to college and so wasn't there for it. One of our early recollections of our kid with musical theater was when she was nine years old and her "signature song" at the time was Adelaide's Lament. My parents would keep asking her to perform it for their friends. My daughter performed it at a local theater in a blond wig and at some other venues. It is such a funny memory. She performed it at her theater camp. She grew out of that phase but still would enjoy playing Adelaide some day. Take a lot of pictures and enjoy your D's performances. Ah choo!

My Son's high school also went over the rainbow and down the yellow brick road doing the Wizard of Oz a few weeks ago. He was the Scarecrow! :)

My D's high school seems to be one of the later scheduled musicals (Into The Woods). They don't go on until the first weekend in May... however, this is the first year they're doing a Sunday matinee as well as the usual Thursday/Friday/Saturday matinee (if the band doesn't qualify for Superstate)/Saturday night, so it's a big deal. My D has been cast as the witch, and what's most exciting is that she has an parent volunteer (assigned generally as the wig/make-up coordinator) whose job is mostly focused on my D for make-up.

The Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz and the Witch in Into the Woods are both fantastic roles to play. Wow, what a bunch. Congrats to all of these teens.

We just had auditions for our spring musical today. It is Aida...very ambitious! I love looking at pictures from all of your/your kids' shows!

Hi All,

I can't sleep, so I thought I'd check out cc. I snuck into the theatre tonight.... My son had baseball tryouts up at school & told me to be there at 8:30. I sat there and sat there and he didn't come out, so I decided to go in and wait and since the auditorium was right there.... I snuck in and watched several minutes of my D's rehearsal for Miss Saigon. God I wish I could have taped it. They were rehearsing Sun and Moon and she and "Chris" sounded so wonderful together! ("Chris" has been accepted at U Arizona for MT this fall.) My D is savoring every moment of the rehearsal process and I'm so glad for her. Many of my family members are coming in for the show, the furthest is coming from California! It's bittersweet because my mom had planned to come with my sister. She loved to hear D sing and would have loved it. She'll be there in all of our love for D.
It's been so much fun watching our D over the years. It's going to be pretty quiet around here next fall, and I think our kitty is going to run away or something! Kitty hears D coming in from the car and waits for her by the door. D always sings in the garage & sometimes when D lingers, Kitty sings along! It's really funny!
Enjoy your shows!

My D, MissMillenium, is Hattie in KMK, but they redid the show somewhat so she gets to sing "Too Darn Hot" (the whoooolllllle thing), which will be fun. I have to admit it was really fun to tell her HS theatre teachers, who have historically not cast her in great roles because she's "too tall" or "too brunette" or "we need you in this little part over here" that D got into Tisch. They were a little bit stunned, i think. Hehhhhhhh. And she got the notice just in time to change her senior bio for KMK to include her plans to attend Tisch in the fall. :) Somehow, that alone makes this last musical the best! (I'm mean, i think. I'm not sure i care.)

She's also in High School Musical for community theatre because our S is ten and it's his favorite musical right now. She's doing it for her little brother, so that's sweet.

D's school just finished Les Mis 2 weeks ago. D was Fantine . . . one of her dream roles. It was a tough week for her Dad and I as S was doing his first college dance show at Otterbein on the same nights as D was doing her musical. Luckily for us Otterbein had a Sunday matinee so we all got a chance to go down and see him. Unfortunately S didn't get to see his little sis do Fantine. I dread next year because there's a good chance we'll have a repeat of this year with both kids in shows on the same week-end ... aaarrrggghhh!!!!!!!! D handled it well but I know it hurt not having her brother there in the audience. I don't see too many posts about college shows but S just got cast in Otterbein's May production of "Hello Dolly". He will play Barnaby.

Impqueen . . . a friend of ours didn't get cast in one high school musical - not even in the ensemble! She went on to Cap21 and is now on the national tour of "Spelling Bee". Congrats to your daughter! Isn't it great when things work out like this?

My D's musical finished up March 10th...she played Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls. She wanted to play Adalaide so badly but she made a wonderful Sarah...her song "If I Were A Bell" stole the show...if I do say so myself. I am one proud mom!

Into the Woods

Yay all your kids!

MTaussie, the girl about whom you speak we know very very well, as she is a friend of my D's and they have done many shows together. I also know she never was in any of her high school musicals. Yet, she was the lead many times over at theater camp (more competitive group than any local group of kids), fared well at Tisch/CAP21, and like you say, is now on the national tour. So, Impqueen, your D can have the last laugh. Look at the boy who posted who got cut from UArizona and is now accpeted to CMU and other fine programs. Kids in this field have to be tough skinned and not get too knocked down and to keep their sights on their goals. Most successful actors (or even people in life in general) have met with rejections and not being chosen for this or that, but they keep pluggin' on and believe in themselves, work hard toward their goals and things often do happen positively at some point down the line!

MTaussie and soozievt, thanks for your encouraging words!

Our D has actually done very well in theatre outside her high school. She was cast in this year's all-state thespian production, much to her HS director's surprise, and did very well. But we're in a small town where historically, the ingenues are always blonde cheerleaders and the same kids seem to get cast in every show. A number of the alumni from D's high school are now working actors, but somehow they're never the kids who got the good roles in high school. It's just the way high school is sometimes.

The way i see it, good. This way D's already got a thick skin. She knows it's not personal, that a role is never a sure thing, and that she'll have to fight for anything she gets out of this field - all good lessons, i think. But it's really nice to see so many schools coming out of the woodwork to offer her scholarships. Figures she wants to go to the Most Expensive MT School Ever Ever Ever... heh.

[/hijack] :)

Back on topic.... Kiss Me Kate's this weekend. Oughta be fun!

Hi All,

I would say YES to savoring every minute of your high school musicals! My daughter goes to the only school in the county that DOES NOT do any musicals and very little in the form of straight plays. So, find yourselves VERY fortunate. Thank Goodness that there is a Regional Dinner Theater in our area called the Riverside Dinner Theater that she has had fortune of working at. They have a mainstage show that performs Wed - Sunday and a childrens show that performs every Sat. The Mainstage show usually runs for approx. 2 1/2 months and the children's shows run for approx. 10 weeks. So anyway.... thank your lucky stars. And, for those of you that have performing arts schools close by and are able to take advantage of, what a blessing for you. Remember to always be thankful for all the good things that come your way even in the smallest of venue's. Break A Leg! everyone!

soozievt - Thanks for the kind words, she delivers great sneezes.

CAST MOM - My D worked on Sarah Brown songs for weeks because that was the role she intended to audition for, but the night prior to the audition she had the urge to play Adelaide (go figure)...Sarah Brown is a great role.

My sons high school is doing West Side Story - and he is cast as Tony - and it will be performed mid April. Last year they did Starlight Express - hugh undertaking!! and he was Rusty. They added on more shows (since it was the first time it had been done) and he didn't want it to end. And thus the dream began .......
