Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the Summer Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP) at the University of Wyoming.
There are few threads on the program, so I just wanted to check to see if anyone here has attended in the past. If so, what was it like, both academically and socially/recreationally? And how difficult was the application process?
Do you happen to know if students can go home on weekends? My D is interested especially since there is a salary, but wants some time to hang out friends in the summer as well.
Have they started this up again? They stopped the program for a couple of summers a few years ago – I think I was looking when D2 was a HS sophomore and junior, and she a college junior now. They had put it on hiatus those two summers. I thought it looked interesting, and maybe less competitive than some others.
@nw2this I don’t know, sorry. Since it is a residential program, I would assume not, unless you live in the area in which case it would probably be possible to go home occasionally. Last year’s guidelines said that there would be weekend trips, so it does sound as though there are structured programs outside of research that she might not be able to miss.
@intparent I believe so. I think they stopped it in 2011 but from what I can tell they held the program from 2012-2015, and the website does indicate that it will be offered again this year.
I am actually trying to find acceptance rates right now, I can’t figure out if it is less competitive or just lesser-known.
I attended SRAP in the summer after my junior year (2013), and, I must say, it was one of the best experiences of my life (not exaggerating). I believe application process involved test scores, an essay, and letters of rec. When/if you got in, you have to fill out quite a bit of paperwork, but it was all worth it. They paid for room and board, and I made $2000 (!!!). Plus there were weekend excursions to Denver (we stayed at a hotel overnight and went to the zoo and aquarium at no cost to us; they handled food too!) and a hiking trip in the mountains (got to see snow in summer). Evenings and weekends are your free time (I suggest exploring Laramie), and I still remain good/great friends with my fellow SRAPers to this day (they also went to some of the best schools in the nation, such as Yale, MIT, and Stanford; I attend UF on a full scholarship). You work/research 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, but the strenuousness of that schedule really depends on your research mentor. In the end, I wrote a 15-page paper and gave a presentation in front of fifty people. A great, relatively obscure program that pays both financially, academically, socially, and experientially!
Target group is anybody above freshman level, and you certainly can go home on weekends when there aren’t planned activities (given that the program is only six weeks/five weekends and that there are planned activities, you probably get only two or three free weekends, at most)
Hi! I want to apply this year and I was wondering if any one on this thread @mavsfan@Lbelle43@nw2this actually ended up going and would be willing to share information about the program with me? thanks!!
@hs2med I actually got rejected haha. But I did attend another great program in NJ I’d be happy to tell you about if you live in the area (it’s commuter)!
I just called and they said the application will be available as soon as they get final approval from the school. She is hoping that will be soon. She said the acceptance rate is about 10% and they give priority to students from Wyoming, first-generation students, or students from under represented groups in STEM. She also said the program this year will accept 10-16 students and they try to make it equal numbers of men and women. I hope that is helpful.
