SSAT Help!

Hello! My daughter applied for the Caroline Bradley award. I have no idea how she compares - we are from a rural part of Louisiana but my daughter has big dreams! The SSAT is only offered once a year in our area. However, we are traveling to Texas in a couple weeks for a graduation and she could take the June 8th test - just to get a feel for the test. Any thoughts or ideas? We have no clue what to even expect. We know no one who has even heard of the test....haha! Thanks so much! This forum is so helpful!

We found the “Study Guide” that can be ordered from ssat.org to be the best material. Since there is not enough time for mail order to arrive, you may want to try a bookstore at a city, e.g, Barnes & Noble etc, and look for an SSAT prep book at SAT/ACT section. There are many SSAT prep books from Barron’s, Kaplan, Princeton review, McGraw, even Dummy’s series.
Have her do a practice test.
If you can’t find SSAT prepbook, SAT or PSAT book could do.

Thanks! Do u believe it would be helpful to take the June test?

Yes, taking the June test will be helpful to get a feeling for the SSAT. It is very helpful for kids to practice analogies (not generally covered in middle schools), since it is an important part of the SSAT. The SSAT will not keep this year’s scores, however, and she will need to re-take the SSAT next year for BS applications.

(I checked the Caroline D Bradley application website, and it requires the SAT (score over 500 on either critical reading or math), which is a different test, just checking that if your child is a 7th grader, the Bradley application was already due with the SAT score from earlier this year.)

We completed the Bradley application in 7th grade, and were not selected as a finalist. Despite that, several prep schools do read Bradley applications and that led to a letter of invitation from a great school, where my daughter ended up.

Best of luck. The Bradley is certainly a long and exhaustive application, in comparison BS apps are a snap.

We have already completed the Caroline Bradley application. It was due earlier this month. I’m interested in the SSAT as preparation for applying for BS, whether she is a CB Scholar or not. I just wanted her to feel prepared when she takes it in the fall. Thanks!!!

Oops! It’s June now…the application was due in early May. LOL!

So, time to get the book ;-)

If she did well on the SAT she should do well on the SSAT. Get the SSAT book and have her take a few practice tests. Since she has already done a similar test under official conditions I would only suggest the June SSAT if she is worried about the test. Otherwise take one in the fall which gives her time to retake it if she doesn’t do well.

Well, the problem is she took the ACT for Duke TIP and Caroline Bradley accepted that in lieu of the SAT. So, she’s never taken a test like the SSAT before. Perhaps it is for the best she take it in June to get a feel for it. Thanks!!!

Just wanted to clarify for anyone interested in helping me. :-)

We did complete the application - it was due May 6th. It has been received. When I made the other comment, it was because I said the app was due earlier in the month - when in fact it was June 1st when I was typing. I am interested if taking the June test is good practice for taking the test in the fall. My daughter hasn’t taken a test quite like the SSAT. It seems from the answers I’ve received, this is a good idea! Thanks!!
