For my SSAT I scored a total of 69% (70%-Verbal, 40%-Math, 89%-Reading) which isn't exactly what I was planning on getting. I'm applying to Suffield, Taft, Blair, Peddie and New Hampton.

I'm completely in love with Suffield and I always have been, and I know that's not good especially with my scores so low. In my interview we did however discuss that my strengths are in history and english, so I'm not sure how much good that does me. I've wanted to go to Suffield for such a long time now, and I never realized how selective it is.

I'm applying for 10th grade and I have really good scores in schools and a bunch of extracurriculars and community service and everything. The interviewers at Suffield and Taft seemed pretty impressed, but then again they haven't seen my scores, but I think my application was really solid with a good essay.

How much importance do they place on scores, and does it help me that I'm applying to be a sophomore? Also, how do I become not be so attached to a school? Thanks!

I’m completely new to this application process so I can’t give much help, I’m applying for Taft also.

SSATs aren’t everything. Of course, a good SSAT score can help your chances of getting into the right BS but in my opinion if you have solid essays, a good interview, show that you’re a hard worker and have good ECs, you still have a good chance of getting into the school you want.

Lots of kids score 99s on their SSAT only to be turned down by some really top schools. Why? Because SSATs aren’t the only thing that’s important. ;)

According to Boarding School Review, the average SSAT score for students admitted to Suffield is 68% - which is actually one percentage point lower than your score. The fact that it’s average means that plenty of kids with scores lower than yours also got in. So what are you worried about? It sounds like you’re right where you need to be for that school.

That having been said, simpleasthat may be new to this process, but his/her comments were spot on!

Taft states the minimum percentile for acceptance is 50%, so no worries!

Okat thank you so much! I feel so much better about applying. I’m still stuck on Suffield and I of course am trying not to be so stuck on it in case I don’t get in. Any suggestions on how to go about that? :)

Well, maybe it would help us to respond if you could explain why you are so set on Suffield. What is it about that school that makes it so appealing compared to the other schools you are applying to?

I just really like the environment, how to the school is, the sense of community, and it’s somewhere where I can see myself. It’s a small school, good academics, the music and sports, and even the campus. I know I sound completely crazy but I’ve wanted to go there for such a long time because it just feels like a place I could call my home away from home, unlike the other schools I visited for some reason.

Sounds like some solid reasons, and it is important to listen to your gut feel. I am getting the sense that the school has been on your radar for a lot longer than the others - maybe you live closer to it and have heard about others who have attended and liked it. That being said, try to make a conscious effort to learn more about the other schools with an open mind - read all you can, and maybe make a list of things you like about each of the other schools. Surely there was something about each of them that you liked well enough to want to apply. You have a fine list of schools. Focusing on what is great about each of them may help you dwell less on just one. Plus, remember that lots of what a school will be like will come down to the other kids who happen to be there when you are, your roommate, your teachers…things that you just can’t know everything about right now. Best to keep an open mind. If all else fails, keep busy with friends, go for a walk, watch a movie…try to keep your mind on other things. It will all sort itself out. Good luck and keep us posted!

I actually knew about Taft and some other school before Suffield, but I’m trying to keep an open mind. They’re all great schools I’d be happy I realize that, but I just feel like that’s the school, you know? I’m just hoping I did everything well enough that they’ll want me, or any of those schools really We can only hope now. Now I just have to find ways to keep myself busy. This is frustrating! I never thought this would be that bad! :D
