First ((hopeful)) thread!

Hi everyone! I was pretty much lurking around this site, and I finally decided to get out of the shell!
I'm applying to a lot of schools for September 2013 (Taft, L'ville, Hotchkiss, Choate, Exeter, Andover, Peddie).
So I took the SSATs already, and found the scores mediocre...
Math:97%
Verbal:95%
Reading:75%
Overall: 95%
Eh. I was sort of disappointed because I need financial aid and I heard that getting a high SSAT score will increase the chance of getting it...?
Well, I do have a "hook." I play the violin and go to this prestigious music school in New York. Also won a lot of competitions.
BUT MY SSAT SCORE D:
Btw, I had my interviews! All of the people were so nice and encouraging!
Anyways, I'm in desperate need of CC experts, thank you!!

There is nothing wrong with your SSAT score. 95% overall is great for any school you are applying at!
A high SSAT score wouldn’t necessarily help your chances of getting in, but it certainly won’t be the factor that brings you down. For example, at Andover, the majority of applicants would have high SSAT scores, so it really can’t be the deciding factor.

It’s great to apply at many schools. If you play music and go to a prestigious music school, you may want to try an art school, since that seems to be your focus.

Good job with your interviews! Just do your best, and then give it a rest. Basically, that’s all you can ever do.

May I ask what a SSAT score is and why we are talking in percentiles?

SSAT is a test that boarding school applicants typically take. The score is most commonly discussed as percentiles, as in “I got a 99% overall on the SSAT test. This means that I did very well, and better than 99% of the applicants in my grade.”

I knew what a percentile was but not what the SSAT was so thank you. I was more along the lines asking who are you compared to since IDK many people that have taken the SSAT. (actually none)

Well, I believe you are compared to the other people that took the test in your grade, and how you matched up to those people, and the people that took the test in the past.

I don’t quite remember, but it is explained somewhere on their website.

And actually, quite a few people take the SSAT. But it’s mostly used for Boarding School/ Private School admissions, and vary rarely for anything else.

I would kill for that SSAT score. Good job, and don’t be too hard on yourself!
@Spldaisy: Yes, a lot of people do take the SSAT. I had some fifth/sixth graders at my test! (Guess they’re getting started early ;))
And at the OP: There’s no way we can tell if you’ll get in, but every kid on here is smart. You might get discouraged looking at all the stats here, but you’ll find that most every kid on here (generally) gets into their first/second choice school. That is because CC is the cream of the crop and the people that are most devoted to their application… what other nerds like us would be on a college/ B S forum? Tip: Don’t give away too much personal information-- better safe then sorry because your application could be found by an Admission Officer and matched with you, and then anything you said could be held against you. Small chance, but it’s better to not take a risk on here.
That said, have fun exploring CC! Posting is one of the best aspects and I wish you the absolute best with your application! Never underestimate yourself :)
