They have helpful, systematic methods for solving problems, and yes, their answer explanations are very helpful (especially for reading for me, my least-difficult subject ><)

However, Kaplan does have some easy practice tests... so if you have the cash try buying another book for practice tests

For me, though, Kaplan sufficed to get my score

I used Princeton and got a 99% in Verbal and overall, I actually think it's one of the better books to use because the practice test they give you is much harder than the actual test (in my opinion). I did the practice test the night before the SSAT, and self-scored a mid-80s, which got me freaking out the next morning (especially since I didn't rigorously study my vocab). But after the actual test I felt a lot better because it just seemed easier.

Haha well there was a vocab list that I got through like...half of. I ended up being so busy in school I sort of shirked off studying. When I did have the time to study I used quizlet.com though (: FreeRice didn't help me much, because they words they have there are so obscure I knew they wouldn't be on the test. I studied some roots too, because the Princeton book had a list for those too, ahaha

But I found most of the words on the SSAT to be words I knew before either from reading the news or books, so if I hadn't studied I'm not sure how much difference there would have been. Maybe 2-4% less?

I studied over 100 words (seriousily) but on the SSAT it didn't help at all. Why? First of all for some reason not many of the words had roots. For the ones that did they only had one root/suffix/prefix and it was difficult to determine the meaning. To me it didn't help at all. To see if I knew more roots if it will I help I got a 1000 roots/prefix/suffix list and took a practice test. It only helped on 1... So for my 2nd SSAT I studies a list of words I got. 2 of the words came up on the actual SSAT. (2 questions makes a huge difference in scores!)

I took the SSAT yesterday, and found the Verbal section much much harder than the Kaplan practice test. I skipped about one or two on the Kaplan and got one wrong, something like that. On the SSAT, i had to skip at least 5 or 6. I have no idea what type of score that will come out with

freerice.com doesnt work at all. we just recommend it cause we want more rice donated to the poor :) lol sorry but we lied for a good reason and cause, right?

yeah, quite honestly vocab is the hardest section to study for.
Reading is all about technique and math only tests a couple basic skills.
I studied thousands of words. Only four or so were on the test.

Either you know it or you don't"
So wouldn't reading be the hardest to learn? Haha. Just thinking.. Vocab was pretty easy, I think it's all about being well-read and learning roots.. I had no idea how to study for reading, so I totally bombed it. Arghh :@

I took the test in 7th grade to get into my private shcools and got an easy 99. The vocab will be harder next yr divealive. Its gunna be either you know it or you don't, their not putting words with easy roots.

I don't think you study for reading, either you comprehend stuff well or you don't. You could learn how to answer 1 or 2 types of questions which will help. Becuase if you miss more than 4 your percentile takes a big dip. And this is out of 40 lol.

I only missed 1 in vocab.. however, i missed/omitted like, 8 analogies. whoopsies..

"You could learn how to answer 1 or 2 types of questions which will help." how/where would one learn to do that? kaplan/princeton review had .. unhelpful (to me) reading comprehension guides. but then again, i basically didn't prepare (well, close to nothing), so i guess it deserve it.
grr, i'll ravage those books about a million times before i go wasting another 100 dollars on standardized testing..

Your probably going to be fine divealive lol. I didnt study at all for my first one (mistake) and did horrible. But minimal studying and you should be atleast 80's

ok i just want to mention that all of the people who said they got 99% cuold not have ALL gotten 99%. That means about 50 people on this site got 99%, plus I am sure that there is more people who got that number, but if you a get a 99% that means your beating 99% of the people who took that test. That means that the 50 out of 5000 people who took the SSAT test are on CC...............hmmmm

Actually, I thought the 500 word Kaplan SAT book came in handy. Also, Edgar Allan Poe's was helpful too from Kaplan.
But the actual Kaplan study book on vocab wasn't much help on this SSAT because you never know what would be in that list.
