I usually post in the Harvard forum but I have a younger brother who is applying for prep schools. He is taking the test on January 6, but due to a family emergency, we have to leave the country for several weeks! We changed the test site, of course, but since the test is this Saturday, we are now on stand-by testing.

Does anyone know how stand-by testing works, and if the chances of even taking the examination are high? My brother has been studying hard for this test and to miss a test based on a family emergency beyond our control is unfair.

I took it on stand-by for the december test. What number are you?
It was fine, i took it like all the others. If the test site isnt usually jammed-packed, he'll be fine. Also, I dont think many people are taking it in January. At least not here in NJ.
Also, on the SSAT site, it will say if a testing site is full and it wouldnt allow you sign up for that one.
Its usually all a scam so they could make more money.
$170 is ridiculous. i missed the deadline by one day!

If the stand-by does not work, he can also arrange to take the test with an educational consultant. A list of the approved consultants is on the ssat website.

My brother's number is #30. It's taking place at a big university in the country to which we have to go, so I think they may have space... who knows?

Do you know if prep schools will accomodate for this? He's not applying for boarding schools but rather well-regarded schools in the Boston/Cambridge area as my parents are relocating there.

If you go to the ssat website, you will find a section called "alternative testing" if my memory is correct. They have a list of approved educational consultants. If you use an approved consultant, I don't think the prep schools will care.

hmm, well i took it at a small school and was #4. there were many walk-in registrations too. So just get there early.
many people dont show up too

You [proably coudl call the schools, explain the situation and see if you could take the february ssatt ( i think bbn and othe rboston schools will allow you to...)

What burbparent says is correct. There are educational consultants in many states, and you just call them and set it up. You usually have to pay a fee to do this because they are private and then they have to proctor the test.

here is what the ssat site says:
The SSAT test fee for test dates between August 1, 2006 and July 31, 2007 is $96 (USA/Canada), $170 (International). In addition, consultants will charge an administration fee. Contact individual offices for specific fees.
