I know that SSP is not as prestigeous and well-known as RSI, but, if anyone knows the number of SSP participants rejected from CalTech, please post.

Also, who else from CC is applying to SSP this year?

The point of these summer programs is to gain research experience, see how it feels to be in a lab, etc. Prestige is nice, but try to focus on the learning and less on the stats. Someone may know how many SSP participants were accepted, but I doubt they keep track of those rejected.

I agree with you
I do apply there just for the sake of going there and doing what they ofer, and this question got into my mind after reading about arguments over AMC, AIME, and eventualy about USAMO and RSI somewhere on the MIT discussion forum

oook...so....anyone here applying to SSP this year?

ssp was the best summer of my life. i wouldnt worry too much about the prestige difference between ssp and rsi, go with what's more fun (ssp!!!)

what year were you? and were you in ojai?

representin for socorro '05

astronomers do it all night long.

just remember that.

Did you see Tyson Mao? He worked at the VLA during the summer, I think.

ech! socorro! gross!

ojai all the way, baby!

6 weeks of continuous agitation! haha!

yeah, California rules! :)

psh, socorro people had more fun last summer.

and as far as location goes, socorro is better for field trips... white sands missile range, including the trinity site, LANL, the missile and explosives testing range right next to us (that was intense), etc.

but hey, SSP is SSP. We're awesome wherever we are.

I think they said in the Universal Times that their long term plan is to open one or more other campuses. Phoenix would be cool, maybe Boulder too.

ahhh...dont you think oklahoma would be a great place for ssp?

and what are you talking about better field trips in new mexico??? we got to go to jpl and CALTECH! plus the weather is better and we got all the international students!

1) field trips: granted, caltech is awesome, but most people at SSP have already or will later visit caltech. let's say JPL is equal in coolness to Los Alamos National Labs: socorro still has white sands missile range, the trinity site (the site of the first atomic bomb test, which is only open to the public once a year), and the very large array. we also got to see two explosives tests, and definitely felt their shock waves. it was hardcore.

2) weather: socorro is warm, but contrary to what most of us thought going into the program, it is not a desert. also, there were several occasions where we laid on the field during intense thunderstorms. plus, we are on a 6,000 ft. mesa, so the skies are clearer at night.

3) international students: we had one guy from italy and one guy from south korea

we got to drive in golf carts to the observation domes.

socorro gives you a better taste of college life, too, because it is actually on a college campus.

if my mom finds out socorro ppl get to visit trinity site--im not going to SSP even if they'd paid me a million dollars (she won't let me) ;)

btw, when will they send the decisions?
(i applied (hopefully) before the first deadline)

hey i already got accepted, does anyone know how generous they are with financial aid. $3300 is a bit steep for me, i was hoping for at least $2500??

ssp's pretty generous with financial aid, but of course it depends on your financial background, so i cant really give you an estimate of how much you're gonna get...

anyways...Matt is right SSP (especially at socorro) is pretty damn awesome. to answer the op's question, from our campus (socorro 2005) these are the rough early acceptances:
Caltech-3
MIT-3
UChicago-2
Stanford-1
UPenn-1
Harvard-2
and we had an olin candidate :)

those are just the ones we've heard of up til now
i cant really get the number rejected or deferred, as we dont give each other a breakdown of our college admissions...

but yeah, in addition to being a great place to experience research first-hand and make really cool friends, ssp probably looks good in the eyes of college adcoms too

o yea, some back ground info:
there were 34 of us in the program, and i think we had 3 sophomores, so that leaves 31 of us
im estimating that 20-25 of us applied to a school early

make that two olin candidates... spencer and I.

goddamnit, just got rejected from MIT and caltech today.

just based on numbers though, i have a good chance for Olin... they accept like 60-65% of candidates and put an additional 5-8% on a waitlist that gives you automatic 1 year deferred admission if you cant get in off the waitlist.

thats kool tho matt, either you get into olin or another great school

doesn't matter, we'll all be happy wherever we go

and thats the attitude that needs to be adopted by many cc'ers...

matt! hey dude!

Anyway, yeah, SSP was an amazing experience. I would recommend it 150% to anyone even remotely interested in astronomy, because it exposes you to some very, VERY high-level stuff.

About colleges, however, I got screwed over by the demographic, as well as mediocre grades :/ ('white middle-class male from NJ', even though I'm from Moscow), so deferred EA from Caltech (didn't hear yet, do rejection letters take longer to get there?)
