St. Andrews American Applicants - Class of 2025

Common APP. AP STAT: 4. Hoping high SAT score gets him in

I would feel very confident if I were you! With mostly A’s in honors and AP classes I would say he’s very likely to get in. I don’t know how covid has changed admissions but that course was ABB on the British A-level system and that roughly translates at other UK unis to receiving one 5 and two 4’s on relevant AP exams. In covid times it sounds like they’re using high school grades, and his high grades in honors classes (freshman year doesn’t matter even slightly!) and that super-high SAT score combined make him an excellent candidate.

BTW I just paid my son’s housing in London and the exchange rate is costing us thousands. Consider that when making a final decision.

Thanks! Fingers crossed. My older son goes to a private US college and UK/IRE University fees are still much more reasonable than US Ones, even with the strengthening of the pound and euro. 40% cheaper at least. My younger son applied to 8 US schools too but he’s adamant about going to Europe (in at Trinity, waiting on St. Andrew, was thinking of applying to Edinburgh but didn’t)

What time of day does the university release admissions decisions for Americans interested in IR? Do they tend to release decisions in batches or is it random? Thanks

For international applicants, I believe it is rolling admissions. I applied October 13/2020 and received an offer for MA, International Relations in late January. The IR faculty is the most competitive at St Andrew’s, and accordingly, it depends on your scores, grades, personal statement, and the number of applications they receive.

For those who applied to other institutions (St Andrews does not publish undergrad admission statistics for some), the UK Freedom of Information Act 2000 obliges all public unis to publish their respective programs’ admission rates. To learn more: https://www.admissionreport.com/

This is a stressful time for all applicants and families, and thus, I will you the best of luck.

Still waiting, applied Oct 15, Classical Studies.

@selomen, decisions are generally released on a rolling basis, by subject. Typically, yes, they will come in batches- but there can be more than one batch (I know IR has already had at least 2 releases this season, and last season I know that some US students heard as last as March). There’s no point tying yourself up in knots - and it’s good practice for dealing with UK universities: it will happen in it’s own time.

tl;dr- patience, grasshopper!

Is anyone heard about economics?

Has anyone had a response for Biology yet? My D applied Nov 18th. She was just asked to submit her midterm and predicted grades. Has anyone else been asked this, and if so how quick was the turnaround on decision?

My S applied for Bio on December 2 and he hasn’t heard, and we have not gotten the request for midterm grades. What state are you in? Hoping the answer is soon! Good Luck to your daughter!

Thank you! We are in OH. Good luck to your son!

Has anyone seen anything on whether St. A’s has also seen a massive increase in applications from americans like U.S. schools are seeing? I wonder if the increase is a rule everywhere or if it is just a thing happening at U.S. schools.

@spaltz I can answer some of your questions. Years ago, I did a JYA and MLitt at St. Andrews. My B.A. is from SMU. I am, and have been for…geez, 18 years, a practicing attorney. I went to law school at Georgetown (a T15 law school). Now, while my B.A. was from SMU, my years at St. Andrews have never had a detrimental impact on getting into or practicing law (aside from ordering transcripts every now and then). Full disclosure, I deferred law school for a year as I earned a Fulbright to the UK to do an MLitt in International Security Studies. Georgetown was quite happy to offer me a deferral and happy to have me come back. As for now, I own my own firm (7 attorneys). I would not worry too much about the impact of a college degree, long term, on your income. It may impact your initial income, but after a year or two, what you make is based on you, not where you went.

No problem! I applied October 30 and heard back feb 5. I had a 1450 sat (740 RW & 710 M), 5 on APUSH and AP hug, 4 on AP art history and AP English language. I also had a 4.0 gpa and 4.87 weighted. But keep in mind that the entry requirements are lower than this. If you applied, wishing you all the luck!

Great stats, probably writing. Is St. Andrews your First choice? Your GPA is ridiculous, higher than my sons; his strength is a 1550 SAT, 780 math/770 verbal. They certainly took a long time getting back to you, over 3 months. He only applied Jan 1 so may be waiting a month or two more…

Haha well that SAT score is ridiculous. As for waiting for a decision, I am pretty sure that they release decisions on a rolling basis grouped by the course you applied to. (EX: I think they release all history applicants who applied around the same time on the same date). It is one of my top choices–I am waiting to hear back from a few ivies and LACs  Best of luck

I bet you have a really good chance of getting into an Ivy and other top US schools with your stats. Of course with US schools ECs come much more into play. My son really likes the idea of Scotland for college, his parents are a little more nervous about it -ha!! He also applied to a couple of ivies and will seriously consider going to one if he gets in but I think the chances are remote. Ivies have gotten a record number of applications. I’m just hoping the class of 25 can have a normal college experience. My older son goes to Wake Forest and loves it, but it’s been a tough trek with the pandemic
