I was wondering if someone could help me compare these two schools, especially in regards to academics, extracurriculars, and general atmosphere of the school. I realize these two schools are not especially well known, so any and all help is appreciated!
Have you looked at Boardingschoolreview.com? They have a comparison feature
Yes, I have looked at that website, and so I have a general idea of how the facts/statistics for the two schools compare, but I was looking for more first-hand knowledge. Thank you for your suggestion!
OK this…is a small thing. I looked into Kents Hill a tiny bit as we knew someone who went there…and I was not impressed with the food they were serving the students. (We did not visit the school) I looked at the menu online. It looked like a lot of frozen nugget type stuff?
Hmm that’s something I hadn’t considered yet, I’ll definitely try and take note of that during Revisit Day, thanks!
Just ask as revisit days can have ‘special’ meals?.. Good luck and congratulations!
…you know… I just peeked at the menu online and it seems like some good offerings, so don’t give my opinion much weight. That said, ask kids what they think of the food…it’s a window into the daily life of your future student.
Got it, thanks so much for your help!
Well, it’s unlikely that many schools are up to the dining standards of NMH, but at the end of the day, it is institutional dining after all. I’m not sure that I’d have that be a deciding factor in my selection.
FWIW, dining at Kents Hill is outsourced to a company that handles dining to a number of HS and colleges; not that that necessarily means anything. Certainly try to check it out firsthand if/when you visit.
@skieurope is spot on and knows his stuff! I have to come clean and explain my kid goes to a school on a farm where they do a lot of the cooking and cleaning. It seems I may have just sent you looking for the wrong factors.
Thank you both for your replies! Does anyone else know anything about either of these schools? I heard Kents Hill is very isolated, is this true?
I’ve driven by Kents Hill hundreds of times. My family had a summer cottage on a lake less than a mile away. It’s in a pretty rural part of Maine, but not too far from Augusta which is the capital of Maine. The scenery in the area is absolutely breathtaking. I can remember one scenic overlook right across from the campus, absolutely beautiful. There is a little Apple orchard across the street where you can pick apples in the fall and has yummy homemade pies. If it’s still there, there is an animal sanctuary type of place where a man has rescued many wild animals and will give tours. I patted a baby tiger there one afternoon. I think that the term rural is all kind of relative. If you’re coming from Beijing then it will feel like the end of the earth, but it is pretty typical for Maine. It’s the kind of place where people wave when you drive by and talk with each other in the store. I absolutely loved the summers spent there.
That being said, we never really went on campus. Most of my visits were when school was on break… The campus did look beautiful from what I remember.
I couldn’t tell you anything about the other school.
Thank you @Momto4kids, this is very helpful! It sounds beautiful.
