St Georges vs. St Marks

So I'm applying to some of the top boarding schools like Exeter, Andover, St Pauls, and Groton. I'm also applying to middlesex and milton and I think I have better chances of getting into those schools. My parents want me to apply to another school as more of a backup, and I'm trying to decide between St. Marks and St Georges. Both schools seem great, but I only want to apply to one because I really don't want more than seven applications to have to do. I would love opinions on both schools. Thanks!

Seriously? My gosh, please read through the thousands of posts about kids who apply to Tier 1 schools and think of a St Georges or a St. Marks as a back-up. I think virtually everyone would tell you to exercise more realism. STG and SM are not gimmes.

I realize that Parlabane and I realize that backups may not have been the best name for them but they are not quite as difficult as some other schools. I need to add one more school to my list that’s slightly less challenging than exeter or Andover and I’m considering those schools because I think that they are both very good schools. They are just not the most difficult of the schools that Im planning on applying to.

Have you looked at Hotchkiss or Deerfield?

Parlabane, your hostility was uncalled for.

prepschoolplease I have looked at both Hotchkiss and Deerfield, but my parents have decided that they are too far away from home.

Let’s get down to some serious business of deciding. St. George slew the dragon but St Mark was an apostle. George was also a Beatle, but Mark was in a band called the Funky Bunch. Okay enough stone cold reasoning. The answer is proven. St George for you.

amusing to hear this when DS is an int’l student

I presume u are applying to be a boarder, not a day student. Does 2 more hours driving really make that much of a difference? Seems rather geographically limiting to your choices.

St George is more social. A Good friend says its like an exclusive 4 year “club membership”. The school grounds are beautiful and the parents are fixated on how the place looks and it shows. A small segment of very rich kids attend. They have reluctantly gone the “diverse” route and most alums think they have overdone it. But the smaller group of rich kids live the life, travel, party etc and the fun spills over to the rest. When all is said and done the connected go where they want because of legacy, the diverse go where they want and the rest who assume the name of the school will get them in are suprised.

I’m going to sm this year. I never applied to st georges but I have a close friend who graduated from there. She didn’t enjoy it at all, she said everyone was really snobby and the sports teams weren’t up to her standards. I fell in love with sm though, and I think its a wonderful school. I would recommend applying to sm for sure
