St. Olaf visit (and THAT letter)

Writing from the c-c-cold depths of Northfield--

When we arrived on campus yesterday, my daughter mentioned again how annoying it was that St. Olaf sent her a letter to inform her she was not getting their top scholarship. Let me hasten to add that it had nothing to do with her expecting that she would get it. She does not have superstar scores for St. Olaf and we never expected a Buntrock invite. But this was the only college to write to her specifically with news about something she is definitely not getting. So, I was wondering how this visit wold go!

We got there several hours before her dance audition and she wanted to pay a visit to her regional admissions counselor. Luckily she was able to see us and daughter really likes her, so that set us down a better path.

Finally it came time for the dance audition. The whole thing was only two hours and there were no solos. I was thinking my daughter wouldn't be too thrilled, since she generally feels that the solo is a strong area for her. But, she came out and said it was the best audition experience yet (not so much that she thinks she has the best chance at winning the scholarship, but just in enjoying the experience). St. Olaf is now her favorite dance department.

So now if she can just get accepted, win the dance scholarship AND one of those other big merit awards, she may actually be able to go there. Sigh....

Sounds like she had a great experience – here’s hoping that they come through with great artistic and merit money!

I totally agree with you that it is really bad recruiting to send kids who may not be expecting a Buntrock invitation a letter telling them that they won’t be getting the Buntrock! I’m glad she was open to giving St. Olaf a second chance.

snoozn,
but if she was there this past weekend, wasn’t she, by their invitation, interviewing/auditioning for the Dance Scholarship at Arts Weekend? (My son was there for the theater interview).

I don’t know anything about the other arts scholarships, but any prospective student can audition for the dance scholarship, so it’s not by invitation only. The student just needs to send in a form, a dance resume, and a dance teacher recommendation, as well as auditioning in person (or by sending a DVD). Apparently one can even get the scholarship as a non-major (though I hope they give some preference to those who intend to major in dance).

Best of luck to your son in getting the theater scholarship!

snoozn,
What did your daughter think of the dance dept? Is ballet her interest? Is their dept more focused on modern dance or traditional ballet?

snoozn,
I was interested to know what your daughter thought of the dance dept. at St. Olaf; my daughter hopes to major in dance and has a strong ballet background but has not had a chance to visit. Performance opportunities?
