I am curious for most of the shows you have been in...have you (or your child) used stage makeup like the little kits they sell with the cream foundation etc (bill nye I think is the name) or do you use regular street makeup with a heavier application?

D. used the pro kit when she was younger. Has been using street makeup for the last few shows. We were looking at the pro kits the other day and debating if it was a worthwhile purchase again.. I just dont remember that it gave a better look than street makeup applied with a heavier hand?

I don't know that you really need to buy the Nye kit. My guess is that you may have seen it in a packing list from SDM? I recall when my child first went there at age nine, buying that kit. I don't know that she ever used much of it. Rather, all these years, she uses street makeup with a heavier hand. Then for when more significant makeup jobs must be done for certain parts in a show (once she had to be a 110 year old woman in Barnum..."the oldest living woman"), the camp has a full array of stage makeup and people who help create these more involved character make up applications. You don't need to own it yourself. I find that even with theater productions in our region, that there are either make up people or at least a set of theatrical makeup backstage. You could own your own but usually this is available in productions for when you need more than your own makeup.

I've never used stage makeup from a kit....My stage makeup always consists of make up extremely more overdone than what i wear of usual make up....The key for me is to always have a much darker lipstick than my natural lip color and to have much more blush on....

I second what Broadway Wannabe said above and I meant to include that when I had posted before. My D does buy lipstick in darker shades for shows, than she ever is willing to wear normally. And she also puts on way more blush too. So, I guess you could say we buy a thing or two cause of shows, like lipsticks, but it is still from street makeup, not the stage makeup kits. For a regular role, this should do. For something complicated like different ages or not being human or something else, the show likely will have make up kits for that purpose.

The point I would like to add is NEVER share stage makeup. My daughter had her share of bad reactions when she was younger and someone was putting on her makeup from their own stash.

Yes Susan,..I was thinking of the SDM packing list :). I really dont want D. to use community makeup, so I opted to buy it, just in case. It wasnt too much money.

I was just curious what most kids here wore for shows.

For most of the stage productions I've been in, we've almost always used professional stage foundation because it's far more opaque and gives great coverage. But for everything else such as blush and lipstick we use our own-- and always applied with a heavier hand of course.

I know that I should probably start a new thread on this subject, but quite honestly, I don't know how to do that!

So here's my question, does an incoming Freshman need to notify the MT dept. if they plan to drastically change their hair (short cut or color)? I recall reading UCF's handbook and they were very strict on wanting to know about such things as tatoos, etc. I suppose if my D really decided to go short, she'd call ahead, just to make sure it wasn't a problem, but I wondered if anyone has heard anything from the schools about such issues.
Obviously, wigs could be used for performances, but I wonder if schools prefer the girls to keep hair at a reasonable length so that it can be left down or put up, depending on the role?

Lynn, Hi, I have never heard of a school stipulating that but will defer to others if they have.

When you want to start a new topic on the MT Forum....open up the musical theater forum and there is a rectangular white "button" near the upper left that says "new thread" and click on that and it lets you start a new topic and you can name the topic.

I guess that big white box was too obvious for me to see!! I even looked for it for a while...Thanks angstridden and soozievt for the computer lesson! (must be those over 40 eyes tricking me again!)

Mine normally uses Bobbi Brown..love the colors.

BTW do most kids take a caboodles type case to carry makeup in when going to camp since they probably take more than normal...ie a train case or do most just use a regular makeup bag.

I second the suggestion of MAC makeup. Great, great stuff and easy to apply. It's been our experience that most of the professionals we know choose this product.

Angst...There is no one thing that kids use for makeup at camp. Kids carry around all sorts of stuff...whether it is a back pack, tote bag, make up kit, or anything else. It is not uniform. Have your daughter bring whatever organizing carry alls that she likes. It is always useful to have a dance bag, totes/backpacks, make up kits, toiletry totes, etc. for organizing their stuff but also for taking things to and from....a class, a production, and so forth. If the kid has their own music books, you need something to carry it in. If the child dances, same thing. My kid goes with a variety of things.

Now if she only could FIND her stuff when it is show time....
