Stage Management summer internship

My son is in his Junior year at Syracuse theatre program in Stage Management. He is looking into internships for the summer. Does any one have suggestions? He would like to do this in London, but any other locations would be helpful.

Don’t know about London, but try the Ogunquit Playhouse , and Maine State Music Theatre in Maine!

I sent you a PM

As a Syracuse drama alum, I know that Syracuse has an active study abroad office… do they also give students the opportunity to apply for internships? I know that James Madison U., where I now teach, students have the opportunity to apply for internships as part of study abroad… not sure if this is the case in the summer as well… but worth looking into through the study abroad office.

In terms of opportunities stateside – is he planning to attend SETC, NETC, or USITT. I know that we have students attend those conferences each year, and most secure professional summer work. He may also want to look at Backstagejobs.com and tcg.org (artsearch).

Hi,

We did lots of research into internship possibilities in the UK. It’s challenging especially if you’re looking on your own and not part of an established travel abroad program. It took over a year to find a placement that worked and was available at the right time. Different theatres have different requirements and we found that some won’t take students who aren’t living in the UK.

There was a lot of red tape trying to figure things out about Visas and dealing with the UK Border Agency. Things eventually did come together and our son is leaving soon for a winter lighting placement in England.

Good luck on your search.

rightfit: can you tell us where your son is doing his lighting internship?

He’s going to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon about 2 hours outside of London

That sounds like an amazing opportunity. Best of luck.

Cirque du Soleil (on their employment facebook page) says they are planning to offer summer stage management internships. Might be worth checking out if an oversees internship doesn’t work out.
