Standard for being a Richmond Scholar

Does anyone have information about the general guidelines for what it takes to be one of the 45 Richmond Scholars. For example, what SAT scores ? what GPA ? and other relevant information. Richmond is very $$$ so I am interested in their Scholar's program.

Hi BP. First, my credentials…I am merely a father of a Junior at UR. I have no inside scoop other than what I have learned from our experience and from others here. Unless someone says they are from the Admissions Office, then don’t take anything said as completely accurate.

I have seen many people on CC complain because someone with a lower ____ (GPA, SAT, ACT, IQ…) was accepted as a Richmond Scholar than _____ (DS, DD, themself). UR looks at more than numbers. Your grades and scores will make you worth talking about but they want to give the Scholars awards to not only the brightest students but to someone that shows promise as a leader, innovator, humanitarian or scholar. Your essay and ECs will play a big part in this decision. Hopefully you put a lot of thought into your essay to sell yourself as someone that UR wants on campus.

Good luck! It is time to be nervous. I hope you are as elated as my daughter was when she gets her envelope. Let us know what happens!

BP, I think PAV did a great job of summing it up. Your GPA/SAT need to be REALLY solid to be considered. Once you’ve reached that threshold, it’s more about your accomplishments as opposed to your raw stats. It’s an extremely holistic process rather than just UR developing a formula to incorporate GPA/SAT and giving Scholar awards to the top 45. The awards are really given to kids who could go just about anywhere in the world they want to for school.

When are richmond scholar semi finalists typically notified?

Meg, if I recall correctly it is in February.

Hey Meg1021,
I got mine in January last year.

Good luck!

Thank you!

If someone had gotten in early decision and was offered the Presidential Scholarship, are they still able to be a Richmond Scholar?

@hnsutton I think so but your best bet would either comment on the admissions blog and wait till Tom replies, or email the scholars office directly.

I got a notification today that I am a richmond semifinalist. I am a bit unclear as to how the numbers typically work and am unsure which designations to go after. For the Boatwright scholars, what type of writing piece are they looking for? On the website it says “no more than 10 pages” but the essays assigned in my school are typically about 2 or 3 pages. Is this a negative?

I think that I will do Oldham as most of my work is community service based but I am unsure of the second.

Congrats preetsv!!!

Hi. Has anyone else gotten a Semi Finalist notice?

I received semi finalist notice on 12/18… Anyone know how many people typically are in the semi finalist category?

For class of 2016 the numbers were 5,200 scholar applicants and 470 semifinalists.

If you apply by December 1, you are automatically a Scholars “applicant” so this makes the scholars applicant number seem really high, when it isn’t. Many of the applicants who apply by December 1 are just trying to get accepted to Richmond. They know that they have no Scholars chance, and they don’t care about Scholars, they really want to get accepted to Richmond, and since they have their Common App done, they go ahead and apply, and so they are counted as Scholars applicants, misleadingly.

If some were notified of their semi-finalist status in December, do you think no news is bad news :(? Does anyone know if applicants receive official word that they are NOT a semi-finalist?

Wordy - no, there is no notification to non-candidates. Those who received the notifications in December were mainly ED folks I believe. According to last years Richmond Admissions Blog Posts, all notifications are sent out by January 31st, so we’ve still got a little while :)

Biker77 - thanks - that is helpful.
Good luck all!

All Richmond scholars semifinalists have been notified. Those who haven’t yet received notification means they haven’t been selected - This is what an email, I received, from University of Richmond says.

We just received an email that my DD is a semifinalist. Her material is due 1/15. We didn’t apply ED, but did apply by Dec1.
