Well your combined ECs and work experience in college won't blow them out of the water, but they should suffice (I would put the AWOL). Your high school GPA is only average, and far from Stanford average, but your college GPA adequately compensates and then some. Your ACT score is very good and won't hurt you at all. Your ECs and work experience in high school are also very good. Your major is not too common so that will also help you. Make sure, like I said, to include some amount of the reason you already transferred once in college and try to incorporate that reason into why you want to go to Stanford. I say if you write good essays, you have about a 60/40 or 50/50 shot at getting in. I would go for it.

the harder the school, the more of a crapshoot it becomes, no matter what your stats are...and stanford is one hard school to get into

barcelonista,

Sounds like it's worth holding out hope on. In the scheme of things, I wouldn't worry about the application fee if you think you'd really prefer Stanford. It's going to be minuscule against the rest of your college fees, and likewise minuscule in comparison to your future earnings.

Good luck,
Joe

Thanks a lot for the help everyone.

I think I'll probably end up applying to both schools, although I am not sure how yet. The problem isn't just the application fees, it's that I would need two recommendations per school. Coming from a big school, it is tough getting to know professors to the extent where they would be willing to write a recommendation for you. I've already asked one to write my a recommendation for Madison, and I really don't want to trouble her again. Finding four will be difficult, especially as I never even spoke to the professors in half of my classes. Hopefully I will somehow be able to use the same recommendations for both applications, although I am not sure how viable that is.

Thanks again for the help, it is much appreciated.

Tricky situation...but isn't Stanford's transfer dealine march 15th...that's only 9 days away..

Am I missing something, why do you think you need to get 4 profs to write recs? You just need 2 profs to write you recs and send them to both schools.

See, I thought about that and I am still hoping that it will work.

The thing is, I know that Penn has specific forms they email to the professor of your choosing, and your professors have to respond to the questions on that form.

I am still trying to find out if its absolutely neccescary to follow that format if I apply through the common app.

Also, good news. I found out this Friday I've been offered a reporting position at the Badger Herald (School newspaper). It's nothing prestigious, but at least it will bulk up my post high school EC's and should be a pretty fun experience.

Also, do you think I should put the internship I had as part of a study abroad program on my EC list? or as work experience?

Thanks a lot for your help everyone.

Internships go under work experience

So, your 2 profs will reply to the Penn format, and you will provide them with the CA rec form for S. That's pretty normal, and profs know they may need to alter their recs slightly to fit the format of different schools.

I'm applying as a transfer-- I read the rate is about 1.5%-2% each year, but I was wondering if you would please tell me if you think I have a chance.

I have a 4.0 and am currently attending USC's Marshall Business school. Since its my first semester there I have few extra curriculars but throughout highschool I've had tonsss including red cross club, soccer team, state-wide champion in model united nations, and I'm in a successful touring band.

as;dlfakjd; I know that seems impeccable but it seems you have to walk on water to get accepted there.

Do you think I should even really bother? I think that since I already go to a fine institution they will probably just throw my app away.

I'm guessing from your "its my first semester there" that you are a second-semester freshman at USC...clarify. Also, you need to give a really comprehensive list of all your stats...it's impossible to know what you would look like to Stanford without more information...like where you're from (assuming california), what major you want at stanford (assuming business but i don't know for sure), high school GPA, SAT/ACT scores, # of credits/classes taken, which extracurriculars you are in at USC, minority, etc., etc., etc. It's impossible to give a feasible projection based upon such limited information and it is even harder with a school like Stanford. Also, the fact that you attend USC will not hurt your chances of getting in, but rather improve them, so long as you provide a good and articulate reason(s) for wanting to leave USC. From what I see so far, you should apply. Too many students with very good records get intimidated by schools like Stanford. Reward is always commensurate with risk. Also as in one of Coldplay's songs..."if you never try, you'll never know just what you're worth." sorry if this turned into a lecture.....

Off it goes. Just two months to wait.

Good luck to everyone.

--Joe

Going to send mine out after getting some sleep.

did ya'll write your transfer essay on a specific field, or on their liberal arts education?

Anyone else find the 1800 character limit severely limiting on the supplement?

Anyone who has submitted the app in the last hour notice that it says "Submitted 3/16". I turned mine in right at midnight EST so part of the app says 3/15 and the other half says 3/16.

Is this fine? Or are those of us who turned it in after midnight EST screwed?

Darn! I hope we're not screwed. I submitted mine at 11:55 Pacific. Someone post something when you find out.

Mine also said submitted 3/16 even though I did it about 3 hours before the deadline.

Good luck all, here are my stats:

recommendations from legit professors are excellent.
rec. from a stanford professor, director of the program I'm applying to.
3.9 gpa stanford summer session (8 units)

essays should be superb, with legit reasons to transfer (school im at doesn't have the program i want, stanford does...)
lots of work experience and sports throughout HS and college
freshman tutoring coordinator at my school's free tutoring center.

i hope my EC's, SAT's college grades etc will offset my average HS record.

anyone's thoughts on my chances?

gl all.

Whew...I sent mine half an hour before the deadline! haha...I'm so relieved.
