I really want to get into Stanford University. I have a 4.06 GPA rank 4/496 in my class, but I have a low PSAT of 188. I haven't taken any standardized testing yet, but I am passionate about what I do. I'm involved in the state Championship Marching band, state Finalist for DECA, state qualifier for FBLA. I am also part of Key Club and have volunteered 120+ hours so far in high school. I am the Youth Leader for Asian Indians in Northern Colorado, and I am the community outreach leader on my robotics team. Plus, I am the advisory board for the school district. I am also a member of NHS and Mu Alpha Theta. This summer, I am leading robotics camps for impoverished kids in my area, getting an internship in a top building company in New York, mentoring my own robotics team, and leading a leadership camp for Indian American success in the U.S...If I have the time, I may start an organization against drugs and organize drug assemblies in Middle Schools because I live in Colorado. My super close friend (basically my girlfriend) lives in California and it's my goal to get to Stanford. What are my chances?

Oh, my robotics team has gone to the world festival twice, and I will be the treasurer of FBLA next year, and maybe on the NHS leadership board. Oh, I have also completed a research paper on the dangers of fracking and BTEX particles

Slim to none, imo.

If you’re dead set on applying, start writing your essays now and apply early. Every one of your essays and short answers will have to strike a chord with an adcom. There are literally tens of thousand of you trying to get a little over 2000 spots. It is also my understanding that you are more likely to get in as a humanities major, not STEM. This is due to the overwhelming amount of STEM applicants and relative lack of humanities applicants.

Your SAT/ACT will have to be over 2200/32 for you to have any semblance of a chance, and even then, it won’t be more likely than the chance of randomly drawing a red ace from a deck of cards on the first try.

Everything I have said is based off of what I have read on these fora and my own experience in the application/admission process.

Good luck

Thanks. I am a good essay writer, and if I get to the interview, I am extremely personable…Is there anyway you think I could boost my application before apps are due? I was also invited to a camp at stanford, but I’d rather help my community instead. I am super deadset on the the school. My ACT projection is 33-34 right now and sat 2150-2200

are you a sophomore
?

No junior

@arvprastn7
I already think your chances are decent, but can your describe your research on benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes?

What really sucks is that even all of us with 32-36 ACT’s and such with decent EC’s will be considered, but it will all be a lottery after that. It would be silly to beat ourselves up over not getting into such a school.

The top-tier schools are very selective and there for most of its applicants have excellent statistics. The only way for them to distinguish it is through extracurricular activities, which is why you generally need outstanding extracurricular activities to have a very good chance. It in some cases is a bit random, as someone with good extracurricular activities and statistics may be rejected while a person with bad extracurricular activities and statistics may be accepted; however, that is rare.

Don’t set your heart on a school like Stanford… Not even the most perfect students are guaranteed admission.

@wannabefeynman It’s is researching how the fracking releases the chemicals into underground aquifers, especially in rural areas, and how activated carbon sheets or microorganisms that digest BTEX can be used in their water procuring supplies to prevent this from getting in their water

@d0texe I know, but I want to get there, and I know I can if I work hard at it.

Would starting a non-profit geared toward drug awareness help at all? I’ve been meaning to do that in my state and across state boundaries with a friend.

You are in Junior and still do not have an official score for ACT or SAT by now, you are a little bit behind. EC is very important for Stanford, but you need to first meet the academic requirement. How is your uwGPA in 4.0 max scale?

My uwGPA is 4.0. Projected ACT is 32-34 projected SAT is 2000-2100

Why have you not taken the ACT or SAT yet? With a PSAT of 188, why are your projections so high? 2000 will not do it…

Excuse me…screwed up SAT projection first time

^ That is exact what I said. OP a bit behind. Also, the projected scores, no matter they are good estimations or not, they are not quite high enough particularly for SAT.

dont just cram EC now its obvious its for colleges then

No matter how well you do on the SAT don’t get your heart set on Stanford. Stanford has the lowest acceptance rate in the United States and rejects thousands of highly qualified students every year. Make sure you apply to more reach schools, some matches, and a couple of safeties to maximize your chances of getting into a good school. You don’t want to be that kid who gets frozen out of college because he was to optimistic.
