Hi there. I was wondering if anyone knows how much an arts supplement helps in Stanford's admission. Any anecdotes? Personal experience? I am strong in other areas (test scores, GPA) and I'd say I have a unique set of extracurriculars, beyond art that is. It would be a visual arts portfolio. And any info on Yale's arts supplementhow much it helps in comparison to Stanford's?

Thanks! It's much appreciated.

I don’t know anything from personal experience, but you should submit a portfolio for sure. It shows you care and illustrates how good/committed you are.

I’m submitting a music supplement because there’s no way for them to know how good I am without hearing me.

When I applied, I submitted an arts supplement (jazz piano) and was admitted. Was it the deciding factor? Probably not. Did it hurt me? I don’t think so. I had some pretty solid awards and performances to go with it, so that helped.

I worked for admissions last year, and they get a good amount of art supps. If you truly believe yours stands out and will contribute to your application, go for it. Just know that some of these kids applying have international awards for their portfolios, have been shown in galleries, etc, so it might not make as big an impact as you intend. That said, it’s pretty hard for an art supp to hurt your application, it just shows you have one more thing you’re passionate about.

are major distinctions (the international awards, being shown in galleries, etc) requisites for an art portfolio to be taken truly seriously by the arts department? i’ve never entered any competitions, but i can assure you my art is very, very good.
