Stanford CCIS Program

ALERT!!! MY FRIEND EMAILED THE DOCTOR AND GOT THIS RESPONSE:
Dr. Utz:

When will the successful applicants be posted/notified?

Over the weekend, I am trying to increase the number of slots by finding
other mentors. PJ

Thanks soooooooooooo much for posting that. It could mean one of two things:

A) As of yesterday, there weren't enough potential mentors (i.e., whatever number they had last year) and Utz is racing to find some.

OR (more favorable to everyone overall)

B) There were more equally-qualified applicants (so they can't, in good conscience, reject any of these "finalists") than there were original spaces, but funding is abundant, and Utz desperately wants to offer spots to all the "finalists."

Any other possible scenarios?

i prefer to think of it as scenario B Avalon.

on another note

Due to problems identifying the final few labs that will host students, the final list of acceptees for 2005 will be delayed until April 16th or 17th, when they will appear on this site. Please do not call or email Drs. Utz or Fathman to inquire about the status of applications so that Dr. Utz can concentrate on identifying labs (currently projected to be 18 total in 2005). We appreciate your patience.

When they mean 18 labs, does it mean they're taking in 18 students only? Is it 1 student per lab? This seems lower than last year's number of students.

I have a list of all of last year's students along with their mentors (the guys who run the labs), and last year there were 24 students and 16 mentors/labs. So hope is not lost for us!

yay, 18 labs this year vs 16 labs last year. I hope this bodes good news for us.

It just sounds like a logistical issue. Stanford is very popular in the summer and lab space, like classroom space, is probably at a premium. Just be patient.

BTW, have any of you ever been to Stanford or the SF bay area before?

Thanks for posting the update Vikram...

GSP did you apply? I am pretty sure that I am the only person who applied who isn't in the bay area. Everyone else is from Oakland/San Jose etc. I have visited campus as well.

I think it’s pretty weird that the labs just sort of fell through. Echoing what Julie said, either a couple of labs fell through, or they need to accept more people. If you think about it, they basically have to find people who are willing to slow down on their own research projects to work with high school students for two months. That can be pretty killer, especially if you're doing clinical trials.

Oh well, it's just a matter of tiempo now....

Assuming you are from the Bay Area, are there any other eligibility rules? I couldn't find any on their website. From last year's intern's list, it seemed like everyone had to be at least a high school junior. Is this true?

HS junior is the only requirement that I know of (other than US citizen or legal resident).

Yeah, you dont have to live in the area but the problem that arises from not being in the bay area is getting housing/commuting because the program only gives you an internshp, that's it.

that problem is magnified especially since ur from Pluto

Well Pluto is actually much closer to you than Earthlings all think...jk...

Anyway, is this internship program more or less "prestigious" than the RSI program? Or are they almost equivalences?

"GSP did you apply?"

haha, no Ashveer, I'm old...really old! I do know a silicon valley 11th grader who applied for a Stanford internship, but don't know if it was with CCIS or another program.

GSP: That's neat.

Punkette: Less prestigious. In terms of what they give you, RSI is more structured and gives you classes, room/board, and an internship.

it doesn't seem like it's gonna be posted today. god, i'll be so ****ed if i check tomorrow and it says that it will be posted sometime within the next week.

I will honestly go insane.

This delay has me thinking...is the list of selected candidates set in stone yet? I mean, if they were short 2 or 3 mentors, they could have just notified/posted the selected individuals and then have aimed to have a final group of mentors by the date the program starts. But seeing as that hasn't happened, I wonder if there's a "definite" group of applicants (people to whom the internship will be offered no matter what) along with a "fuzzy" group of applicants (considerably smaller than the former group, whose acceptance is contingent upon the availability of mentors). It makes me wonder if there was a similar (though not as late) situation last year -- the "honorable mention" group (i.e., potential "fuzzies") was something they hadn't done until that point, to my knowledge. I think we all hope we're on the "definite" list!!!

I was thinking along those same lines. However, the list online isn't exactly set in stone as well. I know that Nghi, (static) rejected his invite last year, but they didn't take him off the list. I presume one of the honorables got his spot. So yeah, that's their system. My God, they're taking forever and a half.

Dr. Utz is awesome. I hope you guys got accepted so you can tell me what I missed out last summer. Ya, they're pretty lazy about updating the website because my name is still on there.

Actually, there were one or two others on the list (besides static) who turned down their offers -- but no one on the honorable mention list, as far as I remember, was at the poster session (correct me if I'm wrong, but their names weren't on the sheet given out at the poster session).
