***Stanford Class of 2019 Applicant Discussion***

I’ve been reading material on this site for a while–weird that I’m now actually participating in the application madness.

Not the biggest fan of the bragging and general obsessing that frequently happens here, but it’s nice that there’s a place where we can find support throughout this process :slight_smile:

Also @drblack I applied undecided, but I’m interested in international relations/international law. Staying far, far away from STEM, as anything remotely mathematical induces violent seizures.

Thanks @Ellenak96‌ and @emenya‌! Now I don’t feel so nervous about the major thing. Also I spoke to my counsellor and she told me that everyone who submitted their November scores from India last time were just fine. Also the person on the other end of the Stanford helpline told me the same.

Good luck to all of you. I have a son at Stanford. S is a senior this year and its been the best four years of his life. I only wish the same for all of you.

Man, less than two months till decisions come out.

Lol @starbreath‌ That’s what what this thread is here for: Support. I’m sure some of us have experienced enough cutthroughtness from high school. I think everyone here genuinely wants each of us to succeed.

Welcome to everyone who has jumped on the train, RD and REA alike! :D

Also quick question for those who have already submitted apps to Stanford:

I know they don’t make interviews mandatory or anything like that, but have any of you been offered an interview? If you have would you mind describing how the process was like and how it went for you?

For those who submitted their apps, did you use simple sentences for the short answers supplementals or did you just do a list?

@Hawkace I used a list! I don’t think it really matters. Whichever method you prefer.

@starbreath‌ same! I’ m probably going to pursue human biology.

Is it easy/doable to double major at Stanford?

emenya- Interviews are offered only in certain areas.

<a href=“Page Not Found : Stanford University”>Page Not Found : Stanford University;

If your zip code falls within one of the areas, Stanford will contact you for an alumni interview. My d had one last year and it was very casual and informative. She applied regular decision and I think her interview was in February, but I don’t remember for sure.

As far as indicating a major, you don’t have to declare anything and Stanford knows you may change your mind anyway. That said, if you are a strong student with interest in the humanities, you may have a slight edge for two reasons. First, there aren’t as many applicants interested in the humanities and second, Stanford has openly said they want to keep the humanities as a strong area of study.

That doesn’t mean you can simply claim that’s your interest on the application. You need lots of activiites in those areas and they’d best be good ones because it it still very, very, very difficult to get in to Stanford for everyone!

My d is a freshman there and will most likely end up with a humanities degree. She loves it, but she is surrounded by lots and lots of techie types!

Hello everyone! I will be applying regular decision to Stanford, hopefully majoring in International relations and East Asian Studies!

Yeah on the note of humanities, I’ve heard that Stanford tries to maintain a 50/50 balance and that 80% of the pool has a desire in stem while only 20% does in humanities. It is far better odds for them obviously.

Stanford isn’t trying to make the ratio 50-50 humanities-STEM. They are trying to keep the humanities strong by making sure that a segment of the class has an interest there. Those programs are excellent, they just get overshadowed by STEM.

Thank you @pacnwmomof2‌ for the information about the interviews. So for REA will most likely receive an interview in November, if they’re offered one. I’m from Texas, so that’s good.

I’ve been debating for a long time about whether or not I wanted to do REA or RD. I’ve been working along on my applications still unsure. Yesterday, I found out I’m a questbridge finalist so I am now definitely doing REA. Here we go November 1st!

@emenya Congrats with Questbridge!

Is Stanford cutthroat?

@zgamergirl‌

Not at all. Everyone here is very very supportive of each other. We all work on psets together and study together, even though alot of grades are curved depending on the average. Professors generally encourage us to study in groups. I have heard horror stories at other schools about homework/notes stealing and whatnot. I have never heard anything like that here, and have never felt like I’m competing against others.

First, as a mom, I have to commend the students on this page for their support of one another. That’s what it’s all about! Quick question. My son applied ED to Stanford and his completed application, transcripts, etc. were sent as of 10/3/14. We have heard nothing from Stanford to date. Other universities he has applied to have sent emails confirming their receipt of his application. We read that it can take up to 3 weeks to process the application. Should he email to confirm they have all of what they need or should we wait? Thanks for any help you can give us.

@Tbosmom‌ I would wait and check with your guidance counselor. He/she will tell you if everything went through.
