It has a lot to do with location, too.

If you prefer the fit of Stanford over Rice, it shouldn’t be much of a decision assuming money and stuff isn’t a huge factor.
If you like the fit of each equally, take some more time to decide, but I think you should still choose Stanford with the same assumption.
If you like the fit of Rice better, take as much time as you can to eventually decide.

I was in the third scenario: I really got a fantastic impression of Rice, and a great (but lesser) impression of Stanford. The difference in fit was slight, but noticeable. I chose Stanford, and I am now really excited for next fall. I had some buyer’s regret at first, but I have definitely gotten over it.

Also, I really wouldn’t let anyone who doesn’t know much about Rice influence your decision. Because, at least in my case, I got a way better impression of Rice the more I looked into it. It really grew on me, you know? A lot of people were like “why are you even thinking about the decision” but it was clear that these were the ones who didn’t know much about Rice.

Rice has a smaller class size and you are more likely to get personal attention.

On the other hand, Rice also has to deal with hurricanes.

(I live like…an hour away. we’ve missed school for five hurricanes since i’ve been in high school. just saying.)

sea legs, you live like an hour away from rice? omg we’re really close then!

And just to clarify, we’ve only missed school twice bc of hurricanes. This region of TX hasn’t gotten all that many hurricanes. (its mainly Louisiana who gets them all…)

Collegeccer: I knew I wanted to go to college in a city because I hate suburbia. Palo Alto, however, is not just suburbia, it’s more like heaven. I hated turning Stanford down, but I ultimately did because while Penn will let me get my masters’ in romance languages at the same time as I get my b.a., Stanford would not. Coterming at Stanford depends on the department.

Rice has smaller class sizes? 75% of Stanford’s classes have 15 or fewer students; only 2% are over 120. That beats Rice by a good margin.

There are all different ways of manipulating those statistics. Class size numbers are highly deceptive. You have to actually visit rice to see how small the class sizes are, or ask people who go there.

But that isn’t very helpful, because you’ll have a tiny sampling–you’ll be able to see only a few classes at best, and people have taken only a handful of classes, and Stanford offers some 1,800 courses.

By “smaller class size” i meant the freshman class is smaller as a whole.

and I live on the border of Texas and Louisiana… probably why we’ve missed for five storms. heh. (Rita, Humberto, Eduard, Gustav, and Ike)

So after talking to people I know at Stanford and people who turned it down, I was seriously 50/50 about going off the waitlist or sticking to Rice. And then my dad gave me a serious sit down chat and basically told me I would be disowned if I didn’t take this opportunity to go to one of the greatest schools in the nation. so. Stanford 2013 whatwhat!

Ah well, zero chance for us. Congrats though! And I absolutely love the poem!

Hey, uneverknow, you never know if someone will get rescinded or not. Although they may not accept any more people to replace the few that they rescind this summer, it is a possibility, and they have done it before, apparently.
And you can always apply for transfer!
But I’m sure you’ll do great wherever you’re headed. : )

Thanks Soxfan, that’s very nice of you! I guess I won’t be trying to transfer… I doubt that’s my “Thing,” you know? hahaha…

I’m heading off to Brandeis if nothing else turns up in the 4th round, and I’m pretty sure nothing will. I like Deis though. Best of luck for the years ahead! It’s great to see people who like Stanford for what it is- and not just its name- get int!

i got absolutely no update yesterday, anybody else get 1?

Nope… nothing yet

Guys, check your e-mails… I got on the real “Extended” waitlist. I was kinda hoping for a sweet, cold rejection, but I guess I’ll have to wait till the end of the month!

Finally got rejected…no surprise I’m not devastated…I have other waitlists to hear from, and if all else fails I’ll be going to VANDY next fall!!!

Good luck to those still waiting!

Rejected! I’m not devastated either. I mean, slightly disappointed, but knew it was 99.98% happening.

Good luck, uneverknow! And good luck to everyone else at not-Stanford 2013!

congrats, you never know indeed :)

Rejected! Woohoo! Now I can focus on Cal! Go Bears, beat Stanford haha!
