Stanford is electric!!

Wow! Just got back from dropping off our son....my first time at Stanford...the air is positively electric with intellectual vigor! Even before classes start! This is orientation week. The place is alive, and the people are super friendly, from staff, students, RA's to profs...I know my son will do just fine, BUT his dad and I are already missing him SO much! At least I know he's at a fantastic place; academically and socially and aesthetically! (Also, dorm food I tried was terrific...I only wish I could get in line and have all those food choices...and not have to cook it or do dishes...what a dream! Dorm food wasn't that great when I was in college..but then, this is Stanford!) What a place!

u should be proud of him... that is my dream skool

job=mom,
I agree! My d just began her sophomore year and is still as in love with the place as she was from the first. I'm going up to visit her next weekend :) Not to burst your bubble, but the kids seem to fall out of love with the food pretty quickly. (I thought it was great on move in day as you did.)

Hope your son enjoys his experience on The Farm!

Job=Mom

Agree! I was especially impressed that the RAs greeted my son by name (my son wasn't wearing a name tag).

We are going up to visit in October and just made a reservation at the Stanford Guest House.

We, too, dropped off our freshman son for move-in on Tuesday, and it was a wonderful experience. All 3 of his roommates (he has a triple room at Roble) seem so nice, and everything went like clockwork -- bike pick-up, computer set-up, credit union sign-up. The day was organized so well. I just wish I had had more time for checking places out. I did manage to get to the bookstore, the convocation, the good-bye at the residence and the dinner with the provost. I thought the food was really good, and my son agrees. He already has a cafeteria reputation as an eating beast (he runs a lot, and needs the fuel).

The weather was perfect, and all of the staff and student volunteers were so friendly and helpful. He finally signed up for all of his classes today and sounded so exuberant in his last email. He needed to get away from all of the hullabaloo for a bit, and he found a beautiful spot under a tree near a lake. It seems that you can find whatever you need at Stanford!

You guys adjusting OK to having your son gone?

When my oldest left for college, I was weepy for about two weeks. I think this time around, it is a little easier. I am trying to keep busy (distraction).

fresnomom:

So far I am doing better than I expected I would be, since we get along so well and are such good friends. He has emailed and called every day with mostly positive news, and that contact has helped so much. I do find myself forgetting that he is gone and being unpleasantly surprised when I remember that he is almost 2000 miles away.

I wonder if it will hit me harder in a couple of weeks. I am thrilled for him that he is in the place he most wanted to be, but I do miss his company enormously. We have video iChat, so I'll even get to see him "face-to-face" at some point! Being busy definitely helps, and I am busy, but dinner time is hard, with that empty chair sitting there.

Stanford really knows how to welcome its students! The warm reception is etched in my daughter's (and my own) memory forever! In case you haven't seen it, there's a YouTube video of this year's new frosh arrival on the Stanford website. I'm not able to post a link, but you it's right on the home page when you go to Stanford University. Enjoy!

Job=mom and Fresno Mom, what dorms are your sons in? (gladmom, Roble looks beautiful) Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Talk about face recognition! We were surprised when they welcomed my D by her name! We spent three days prior to move-in day exploring the campus. So so beautiful -- felt like we were in a resort! I totally agree, the food was good. People were extremely helpful and friendly. My D felt right at home. Liked her dorm and they matched her with the perfect room mate... The RAs' were such friendly and high spirited lot. Bittersweet when it came time say "Good bye."

Hi Guys!

Yes, this is a very bittersweet time for us...we are so happy for our son...BUT our house feels so empty without him! He is very musical, so it is WAY too quiet around here...luckily, he made a CD of his music before he left...we played that thing over and over in the car on the drive back home.

Yes, the greetings at the dorm were so friendly and genuine...so cool...like I said before, the campus is amazing and I could feel the energy. Our son is at Trancos in Wilbur Hall, and the other kids we met and the RA"s are very nice. He has been matched with a perfect roommate as well! I think the Stanford folks really DO read all of the roommate info sheets when signing up.

We're holding up ok over here, but I feel...strange...empty...off kilter...the goodbye at the dorm was TOUGH. My husband and I both cried as we hugged him goodbye. He's been calling us every day, and we so look forward to those calls! I think it's extra tough because our son is our friend as well as our son...he's a really neat person and he's terribly missed! At least I know he's in good and caring hands at Stanford, and he is a confident and mature young man.

Ah, the empty nest!! :( !! Thanks for your comments and support everyone! Good luck to all the empty nesters!!!
