UCD/UCI: Safety

When do you sleep? Ever?

lol. So while I appreciate all these great responses and everything...

Can anyone please point out my weaknesses and give me some advice to strengthen them?

Bump. See above post, please. Thanks. :]

You have great overall stats. I'm worried that you're counting within things the AP Scholar award and Intel/Siemens award that you really haven't earned yet =P

Also I don't know what half your awards are, though I have an inkling that they were based on your community service and thus can be lumped together... basically your goal is to get in on the strength of academics and service. A decent bet, but you could be done in if a lot of people try the same idea... that kind of thing is easy to jazz up.

All the same, I think you have a great chance. Academic/EC competition awards would be one thing to improve if possible.

Thanks so much for your constructive criticism, lackadaisy. :]

RPI Medalist is pretty well-known I believe. I actually read a Stanford article on admissions, and they brought it up. It goes to the best science and math student at the high school and is a nationwide thing.

Most likely, half the things I listed there won't be going on the Stanford app since they don't like you to send in an extra sheet of info. For that one (which is obviously the one I'm focusing on most since it's my first choice), I'm thinking of putting the following "academic honors and programs" on:

AP Scholar w/ Honor (yes, I am counting on this)

National Merit Semifinalist (with a score of 238, it's guaranteed)

RPI Medalist

School Academic Awards (this is actually a lumped category, for they give out different awards depending on how long you've maintained a high GPA. For example, it includes 2 different certificates, an academic letter, and 3 different types of "pin" awards).

Presidential Gold Medal in Community Service (given out by President Bush for people who have volunteered a certain number of hours in the past year)

Valley Business Roundtable Winner in Financial Planning/Investment (this is local only, but it includes a $250 savings bond, and I figure it'd show a different perspective of myself. Ironically, the project I won for was a financial plan detailing how to pay for a Stanford education)

Valley Business Roundtable Honorable Mention in Community Service

CCIS (Stanford research internship in immunology)

In the chance that I get a Siemens/Intel semifinalist status, I'll put that on there and either lump the two Business Roundtable awards or just get rid of one.

Is that okay or should I remove/add other awards? In addition, are there any other academic/ec awards that I can get? The only awards my school gives out are the academic awards I mentioned, and my ec's aren't really eligible for any awards either. Also, any other advice would still be appreciated.

Also, where do CSF, Mu Alpha Theta, and NHS come into play? Is that under academic honors and programs? And are they even worth mentioning?

BTW, I don't suppose I would have a "hook" would I?

Ok, I hate commenting on "Chances" threads, but I must say that your stats are absolutly amazing. Although the fact that you're from CA could put you in a stronger applicant pool since there are so many CA applicants, I see you as having amazing chances at all the schools you listed--even HYPSM. Your grades are perfect. Your scores are near perfect. Your dedication to extracurricular pursuits show that you're not just a one-dimensional academic person. And all your awards just prove how strong you are in grades/scores/extracurriculars. You're a shoo-in for all the UC schools and I think you'll probably get into Stanford SCEA. Although the SCEA pool at Stanford is incredibly amazing, I think you're application (I'm assuming you'll have great essays/teacher recs/GC report) will stand out and that you'll get in.

Yuxin, You Are Insane

Hell yeah she is.

see the user "californiakid"....you remind me of her. And yes, she got into all of the schools she applied to.

I think the presidential gold medal thing is nice, as are the local recognition for your volunteering. =) Your single EC category is a "hook," I think, because that's the only thing in which you dramatically stand out.

I'm not dissing a 238 or NHS or AP Scholar with Honor; however you should know - for Stanford especially - that those are practically "prerequisites" for the top tier of applicants. I am going for National AP Scholar this year, myself; I've read many applications that have those statistics so I'd say it's great to have it but it's not your biggest thing - which is, of course, volunteering.

I was wondering about those random "Furman Fellow" etc awards - they sound like international graduate-level things =P I suppose if you're cutting them out that means that they were almost-fluffy school awards? They definitely sound better than your local awards - schmaltzy and all - to the untrained commentator, but I'd say you should stick with the local/regional awards, yup. =)

Maybe consider another Ivy-caliber school besides Stanford... as an Asian female myself, I know that its a pretty tough place for us, statistically.

If I do well at Siemens/Intel, hopefully that'll be a hook as well?

Oh, and the Furman Fellowship and Centre Fellowship are awards, but they're not too difficult to attain (they're supposed to be given to the top 4 students at a high school, but they also have tangible requirements: 1400 SAT I believe, a certain GPA, etc.).

smart Asian

If the OP doesn't get into at least one of the HYPS, I'm going to cry.

flippy is right. your stats are good, but admissions are unpredictable. i know a kid who had a 4.0 UW in ib, took 11 ap classes and got all 5s so far, got a 2390 on the sat, did a 3 year research prohect at university of florida and ended up teaching a class for a summer session at 16!

he was rejected from hyp last week so definitely no one is a sure shot

now jjjjj that's just ridiculous

...... shut up

Go read the RD boards at each school you are interested in. Make note of the number of Seimens and Intel kids rejected and waitlisted. Make note of the 2400 SATs rejected and waitlisted. Competition is tough and there are no guarantees at HYPSM. Most unhooked candidates (athlete, URM, Olympian, top actress, etc) have a < 10% chance at these schools.
