Stanford or Yale?

So last week, I was admitted as a transfer applicant to Yale off the waitlist. I still don't know what to do.

The problem is, Stanford gave me amazing financial aid--full-tuition, actually--while Yale's is about $15,000 less. So given that, is there any compelling reason to choose Yale?

Yale was always my first choice. If Stanford gave me $15,000 less, I'd go to Yale in a heartbeat. And yet, I can't justify paying an extra $30,000 for a Yale diploma.

Anyone have any insight? I'm all ears.

If it helps, I'm planning on majoring in Economics and going to law school. Yale Law would be my first choice.

I would speak w/Yale FinAid immediately and tell them your dilemma. See what follows. Good luck to you and congrats

^^Absolutely agree, talk to Y FA immediately. There are many examples of Y matching FA packages from HPS and other schools as well. Your case is different as a transfer, but you have nothing to lose. Good luck!

Absolutely talk to Yale financial aid office. A friend who was admitted to both schools also received much more aid at Stanford, but Yale matched the offer after a few emails and now she’s attending Yale!

Do what the above tell you. Talk to Yale’s FA and hopefully they’ll match it. If not then go to Standford, its just as good of a school as Yale and there’s no reason for you to pay out of pocket for one school when the other is giving you all the FA you need. Good luck

Agree with the above…call Yale FA office and talk with them to see if they can match or come close. If not, go to Stanford…it’s a great school on par with Yale (might be a different story for a school that was much lower ranked.) You can always apply to Yale Law School :)

I’ve already asked the fin aid office for a revision, but they didn’t give me any more money. Not a cent! (And if anyone has any insight on how to improve that situation, I’m all ears.)

But given the numbers as they stand–because it doesn’t look likely that they’ll change–what would you say?

Well then, it’s up to you. $30,000 would go a long way to post grad plans. As much as I love Yale, I think your zip code will be 94305…

Yeah, I would say that unless there is some special reason why you particularly like Yale, Stanford is the way to go. The weather there is much nicer as well :P

Sorry to hear that. My kid was a transfer who just graduated from Y this spring, but I’d advise you to save the 30k for Y Law School.

If you just asked for a revision (without mentioning anything about Stanford) make sure to try and ask again. Nothing you can lose and a lot that you can gain! Good luck!

I think your major may be a wash at both schools. So you may want to check your odds of getting into law school from Stanford vs Yale if you want to an additional check (my gut feeling is Stanford to save money) to make sure your odds stay the same.

i think going to Yale is much more than just a diploma. so just choose Yale if you really love this school.

Did you specifically mention Stanford? I think you need to mention Stanford’s offer specifically in order for them to (possibly) make a revision. That was my impression since they probably wouldn’t make a revision if the other school you’re considering is not a peer school.

I might be wrong …

Guess I just assumed the OP mentioned the S package to Y, since it’s the reason for the review.

I did mention Stanford. They specifically asked for the offer letter, so I faxed that to them, along with some other stuff. But apparently that wasn’t sufficient justification for any sort of revision. I was a little annoyed, to tell you the truth…

Totally understandable. Ignore post #13 as well. Unless rosy is willing to send over $30K for you.

Sorry Yale’s gonna miss out on you. Stanford’s gain.

^^^DITTO.

10 char

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I guess Stanford it is, then.
