I'm planning on going into pre-med but I can't decide on which college to attend. I live in Michigan, but I desperatley want to leave. I feel it would be better for me to go to a private college, but they are all prestigious, so I am a little on the fence. Any opinions?

Go to the one that you want.

Have you been admitted to all 3 already?

How are the financial aid packages from all 3, how do they compare?

Have you visited all 3 campuses?

Why did you apply to these 3?

Do those same reasons apply now?

What is k college

Kalamazoo.

check back when you have offers in hand.

i have been accepted and i will get all of the money that i need

I haven’t been able to visit stanford so I don’t know what it is like, but I have visited U of M and Kalamazoo

Don’t you live close to U of M, you are wolverine after all. Well, I cannot believe that one with the opportunities to have IS tuition at U of M, will not go there. Many would wish, my own D. did not even apply, too expensive for OOS UG. She always wanted to go to U of M, swimming pool alone is worthwhile to consider the place. Afte all Phelps swam there. But D. choose a free UG tuition place and loved it, miss it a lot while at Med. School.
You have mentioned that you will have all the money, does it include Med. School?
If so, then go where you want to go. If you have unlimited resources, you can visit places many times, then decide.

my suggestion would be to read and post on the UM and Stanford-specific boards about their respective undergrad experiences. Like Michigan, Stanford is a unique experience. Some love the campus, but others fine it ugly and too spread out. I’m a big fan of going away to college, but others would rather stay close to home. For the same out of pocket money, I’d take a private college most times. OTOH, Michigan med loves its own undergrads.

It’s definitely worth a trip out west to visit.

I don’t have the money to travel but I will get everything paid for at college. I love U of M but I would love to go to college somewhere warm. I don’t know if it will be worth it in the end to be 3000 miles away from home.

^different people feel differently about being far away from home. I know many who enjoy it, while my own D. (and many of her firends) would hate it. In fact, she refused to apply far away even to Med. Schools, even after she was advised by her pre-med advisor, her range was 4.5 hrs driving from home and she ended up at Med. School 2 hrs away. So, you need to ask yourself what do you want. It could be very frustrating if you end up in place that does not match your own preference.
In regard to public vs private, I do not know if there is such a differentce. D. was at very small private prep. HS, then she choose to go to rather large public UG (that actually felt like a small private place with gorgeous campus and great architecture), then she choose to go to private Med. School located in not very nice spot of the city, but otherwise matching D’s criteria. In regard to location/campus, public UG felt more like private than D’s current private university. In terms of opportunities, her public UG was a perfect place as well as D’s current private Med. School (I imagine that all Med. Schools have plenty of opportunites for their Med. students though). She is only MS1, but loves where she is now while her UG will always be in her heart, she went back to vosit it numerous times with the same comments that she loves it there and happy that she has chosen the perfect UG for herself.

Some schools after admittance, will pay for you to visit if they know that finances are at issue. Have you contacted Stanford and let them know you would like to visit, especially for students’ acceptance day, but cannot due to lack of funds?

The worst they can say is no.

If they included your fiancial aid package there should be a contact person listed on the forms. Or contact your admissions rep at Stanford and ask them.

You can’t lose with U of M. Great medical school, I hear. Not sure if K College is the right place to go, but I know several people who got into med school after going there. If I had to choose, save the money for in state tuition and hit U of M.

Since Stanford would likely give the best FA package (no loans), go there.

Do any of the FA packages include loans? I would imagine that the UM pkg would at least include about $30k in loans over 4 years. Does K include loans in FA pkgs?

Avoid UG loans.

I can speak from experience that U-M would definitely include loans as part of their fin aid package. My daughter is a rising senior and she will end up with around that in loans when she graduates and that is instate.

Kdog044,
Is your D. going to Med. School? If so, does she know that scholarships are very rare in Med. School? I would not advise any pre-meds having any UG loans. There are plenty of awesome places that will give you great financila packages, including full tuition as most pre-meds are very high caliber HS students.

MiamiDAP,

No, my D is not going to medical school. My son is the one planning on it and he is in a very generous private without any loans and should graduate debt free. My brother went to U-M for UG and medical school though so I have a good resource if needed.
