Stanford v. Oxford for prestige?

original poster: y do u care?

oxford is much harder to get into, (i feel confident with this statement, since i have family there), but prestige isn't everything.

just curious.

Yeah I am too

Oh, Oxford definitely. I mean, Stanford is a great school, and it's widely recognized internationally, but Oxford is, like, the titan of all universities. It's about matched with Harvard, and in some countries it exceeds it.

Whatever78 and collegecanwait and soccerfanatic, it doesn't really matter why. Most of the posts on this forum need little if any reason to be ancknowledged. If we had people justify their reasons for posting, most of this place would no longer be allowed to remain!

I cast my lot with Oxford, because it just seems so unreachable, whereas Stanford- eh, I have friends there. It's amazing as well, but it seems far more within reach than Oxford. And, as was said earlier, if you think Harvard looks established and historic, Oxford can match (if not exceed) it, even without being the inspiration for Harry Potter's Hogwarts.

Oxford would indeed exceed Harvard in terms of history and tradition, since it was founded some 400-500 years before it. It is the oldest university in the english speaking world.

Look at those Oxford alumni! Very impressive..

I would think Oxford because it's so well-established. I'd put it above Harvard.

Some people on this thread are uncultured swines...
I hate the american mentality that Harvard is number 1 in the world.
Oxford is more prestigeous than Stanford it has more international repute if that what you mean. Polytechnique in France that is 100x harder, and harder to get into than any school in the world. Berkeley Harvard Oxford I think are the most known Worldwide...

Prestige-wise, I think Oxford wins. However, isn't Stanford a lot harder to get into? I thought Oxford mostly looked at tests and grades and ignored ecs. Just wondering.

warblersrule86, even if what you thought was true, that still doesn't mean Stanford is harder to get into. For instance, what if Oxford required higher test scores and better grades in harder classes. That is one example.

How can Stanford possibly be harder to get into?

Oxford requires that applicants meet with faculty for interviews on a specific literary work (granted there are nuances between the specific Oxfordian schools). These are intense and long. The applicants are even rated on perceived talent in the future. So, even if you are amazing, you would not get in just because they don't think you are going to experience growth there.

I thought this was a thread about prestige, not selectivity. In terms of selectivity, I would say they are too different to compare. Both are very selective. In terms of prestige, any well-educated person would say they are equally prestigious.

I still say Oxford is probably the overall best school/most well regarded in the world. Harvard and Cambridge are its only reputational peers (internationally speaking).

I don't know if I agree. Oxford is certainly one of the top 7 or 8 in the world (as is Stanford), but I am not sure if it is the clear #1.

It also seems like Stanford prestige keeps rising while Oxfords is on the declne

Does it seem like that? I wasn't aware. Both seem stagnantly at/near the top and not moving anywhere anytime soon.

"I don't know if I agree. Oxford is certainly one of the top 7 or 8 in the world (as is Stanford), but I am not sure if it is the clear #1."

There is NO clear number one I don't know why so many people think that. Personally I think Harvard is was overated schools like MIT and Stanford are better. Berkeley Harvard (in north America), Oxford Cambridge (in Europe) and Indian Institute of Technology (in Asia).

I think both are equally prestigious, but in different and unique ways.Hope this helps

I think to the layman Oxford is deemed more prestigious due to its long history and traditions, but really if you aren’t American or British you will find Oxford easier to get into. Amongst my international friends, an Oxford undergrad degree is seen as excellent and rigorous, but does not inspire the awe that a Stanford (or HYPM) degree does, simply because we’ve all been there and know that Oxford is easier to get in, maybe save for a select few courses like PPE.
