^Mu Alpha Theta competitions aren’t comparable to the USAMO.

That is true. But I’m just saying that everything helps at this stage, you can’t expect EVERYONE to get USAMO.

Writing your essay about why you gave up clarinet in 9th grade will probably get you into your safety. Surely you can find something more passionate to write about.

I’m currently a senior at Yale and, although I’m not familiar with some of the new SAT scoring (my class was the last to take the old SAT) and I’m not sure what the cutoffs are now for GPAs, I think you have a fairly good shot. To give you some perspective, I had around a 3.6 GPA, a 700 on Verbal, 710 on Math (no Writing at that time), and far fewer extra-curriculars. I’d say your odds are pretty good.

Yeah BJ but you probably had some sort of Hook…

I think you have a very good chance of getting into most of the schools you need! Compared to people I knonw who have gotten into the schools you want to go to, I think you have just as good, if not better, chance than they did.

I am SO jealous of you! You are going to be super-successful.

yess. i am as well. and her snipps was extremely good as well…

Great stats but I worry about your life. The following quote:

“I could have stayed in both, I suppose, and be pretty good in both, but I wanted to be really good at math. I didn’t feel it would build my resume”

suggests to me that as a 9th grader you started gearing everything you did towards HYPSM. But anyways if you sacrifice that much for it then I wish you do get it as I know if I sacrificed high school for a dream university and didn’t get in I’d be annoyed.

Good luck but it depends on your essays as you seem a typical Asian candidate to me (no offence).

Want an ego rub? Okay, fine. You’ll get into one of the ivy/ivyequivalents. There. Unless u **** up essays, you have good chances. But you already knew that.

Thank you all for your input, even those of you who think I’m just looking for an “ego rub.” I know my stats are good, and that’s not why I am here. I don’t know how my big picture looks because as you can see my EC really sucks, and as shore said, I AM a typical Asian applicant. Also, there are more than ten kids from my school applying pretty much to those same colleges, and they all have better stats than I do and some have much better EC. Would that hurt my chances as well?
I have won a lot of awards in MAO and yes I know it doesn’t really say that much, especially compared to the USAMO. I really messed up on my AMC, so I didn’t even make it to the AIME. I really would not be upset at all if I don’t get into MIT though. I’ve been surrounded by math nerds for much too long. In fact, I think I might not eve apply to MIT. They don’t do CommonApp anyway.
Haha and no I have not been gearing everything I do towards making an Ivy since ninth grade. If I did I wouldn’t have quit band. I was actually really good at the clarinet. I made Florida All-State band two years before I quit and I would have been woodwind colonel at least, probably drum major if I wanted to, if I was still in band. Are you guys implying that quitting band would actually boost my admission chances? That would be so amazing, because I thought I committed admission-suicide when I did that.

Eh.. some people would say it may hurt your chances, from what I remember, it’s from your entire region.. so technically they can accept everyone…but it’s not likely. So while you might not be directly compared to kids at your school.. in a way you still are. In that respect, yes, it may hurt a bit.

Quitting band I mean.. logically speaking as I would think that when you progress in HS you get busier and you have to make some sacrifices, because you sacrificed band does not necessarily mean it’s anything bad.. although it does make you a bit more stereotypical.

Agree with Slipper above. These days it’s almost impossible to get into any of the Ivies with 3.6 GPA/1410 SAT and few EC’s. Sure a few get in, but there’s always some hook that gets them admitted.

I am taking off MIT and adding Vanderbilt, Wellesley, and Rice. What do you guys think?

ur stats are freaking awesome

considered cambrdige/oxford, prb as good as the uni’s u mention here and number based, something u have a lot of!

good luck!

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/560692-northwestern-umichigan-john-hopkins-chance-me-please-ill-chance-u.html

Wow, thanks for bringing that up. I never really thought of applying outside of the US, and now that I think about it it would be really cool! But I’m guessing their financial aid probably is completely different and I wouldn’t be able to afford them ><. My family income and assets are such that I’d receive a fair amount of finaid if I go somewhere in the US.

In at Vanderbilt, no question.

I’m taking off Swat as well, adding Georgetown.

Current list:

Yale- EA
Wellesley
Harvard
Stanford
Penn
Dartmouth
Duke
Brown
Rice
Georgetown
Vandy
Safety

Can you guys chance me with those schools? Well, except for the safety of course. Also, I have way too many colleges on this list. Can you guys give me some insight as the major differences between some of these schools? And please don’t just say, “these are ivy, these are not.”

Thanks so much!

If you like math/science but also like econ, check out Northwestern. They have cool programs in [MMSS, Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, Northwestern University](http://www.mmss.northwestern.edu/) and [Integrated Science Department](http://www.isp.northwestern.edu/).

great academics, rather average EC’s. essays/rec will decide

My mom used to work at the Jackson Lab and I live in Downeast ME
