So far, I've written many more drafts for this prompt than any others. Probably around 5? But I read that this is where to truly show your quirks and interest for something that may not be your passions academically. Such as hobbies, obsessions, etc. I want to write about how I'm a World War II nut, whether it comes to history, weapons, people, or just plain random facts. However, my Dad says I should avoid warfare, military as a topic as it is too stereotypical of "boys", and it's just making me look like I endorse killing and stuff. I disagree. I feel like I can write a good note, as I am really into this. What i'm really worried about is what my sister brought up, which is that since I'm asian, there will undoubtably be a stereotype that asians are smart and nerdy, so that this will only reinforce that and probably look bad. I'm not trying to write about something that'll look good to Admission Officers, but I don't want to write something that will blatantly be negative, either.
What is CC's opinion on this?

If you can make the essay unique and/or humorous, go for it. If it comes across “bland” and more history/research, then don’t do it. The essay is so that the schools can get a sense of you, or a part of you. If you feel that you can do this with the topic of being a World War II nut, try it!!! I personally don’t think being a World War II nut implies that you are “smart and nerdy” or that you “endorse killing and stuff.” Now, if you were to write about every type of gun that is made today… ok, maybe don’t write about that, HA HA.

My thought process was that it’s pretty much true that most Asians will not give history a serious thought, or much interest other than knowing random things here and there, this would be sort of unique(?) but I wouldn’t really be able to rely on this. I’m just really really into WWII, so I thought “Why not?” It’s better than to rack my brain trying to think up of something else…

Thanks for your response!

Maybe it’s just me, but I consider WWII Trivia = History = School = NOT another reason to mention school in this essay. The vast ranges of interests that people have, that don’t have to do with school and trivia, should be focused on imo. I’m sure there are things you’re passionate about that don’t directly relate to school and memory recall, try to see if you can think of something totally random that actually offers a glimpse at who you are.
Because the stereotype of an Asian history buff at school may not be what you want Stanford to know you as.
