Hi everyone! I’m currently a junior in high school and would like to ask a few questions about beginning a club at school. After holding the vice president role in an animal service club at my school and hosting a successful video game tournament at a school fundraiser, I decided that it was best to maybe start a club of my own and get some things going (would spice up my resume, that’s a first). I have had a passion for reading and creative writing ever since middle school, so, since there doesn’t seem to be any sort of literature-related club (besides the Writing Club), I wanted to create a Book Club. As for the video game tournament that I hosted, the large turn-out of participants caused me to consider creating a Video Game Club as well.
I know that creating clubs bulks up resumes for college applications, so I had a few questions about school clubs. What process (besides getting the school’s approval) goes to creating a club? If I make a Book Club, what books should be discussed/read within the group? As for the Video Gaming Club, if I were to host video gaming tournaments over the weekend, how would that be settled?
Thanks for reading! Any advice helps
If you decide to make a club, something that goes towards your interests would be better. I would say Book Club, and possibly Poetry club where you can compete in tournaments.
My best friend is the vice-president and co-founder of my school’s Gaming Club. They would hold “tournaments” during lunch time or after school in order to have a maximum reception. In addition, they would post fliers around the entire school (through your dean’s permission) with the possibility of cash prizes. On average, 50+ people would come to these events. Also, I recommend games that are very popular: CoD (if your school admin allows it), Super Smash Bros, etc. This could attract a larger crowd.
Another thing about creating a club - you need to hire officers (Secretary, VP, etc.). I recommend that you hire students whom are passionate in the same cause rather than your buddies. It is a very tough decision, because your friends are going to beg for positions from you. Honestly, you will go through some “drama” during the first few months. It feels a lot better to go through this with an acquaintance rather than a friend.
Finally, it is important to get the contact info of your members - this will keep your club active, and it will alert them of future events. Clear communication is key - miscommunication will create problems. Good luck!
