Starting a club at school

I'm interested in starting a math club at my high school next year. I know that I will have to talk to my prinicipal first to get permission. But I'm not really sure if students can run their clubs on their own at school. Do they need to have teachers present at every club meeting to supervise?

How does your school work in regards to clubs? I just want to get an idea before I talk to my school principal.

Generally, you'll need a teacher to sponsor the club and a teacher (whether the same one or not) to supervise you every meeting. The teacher will probably also have to approve any decisions you make.

Yeah, clubs at my school need teacher supervisors. (Technically, we're not allowed in any classrooms without a teacher being present.)

Not necessarily. I founded the literary magazine at my school freshmen year and although we do have a "Teacher Advisor," she hardly ever comes to the meetings and does almost nothing. The editor-in-chief (me) leads the meetings and does most of the organizational stuff.

When you go talk to your principal, make sure you know exactly what you want in your club. Like, when you say math club, what exactly are you going to do? How often will you meet? Are you going to join a math league and compete against other schools?

Also, consider how much funding you will need. My school gives absolutely no funding to clubs and to publish a seasonal magazine, you obviously need some money. Thats why we try to do some fundraisers and have "annual dues" of $10 a member (most clubs do this).

Thank you for all your replies!

I already started writing an outline for the math club I'm planning to have. In the outline, I'm stating my plans and goals for the club, what the other students can gain from their participation, and a description for each of the activities I'm planning for the club. I'm going to give the outline to my principal when I talk to him. But I don't think the club will need funding. Since my high school is the only high school in my town, we would not be able to compete with other schools.

write a white paper.
